As you can tell from one of my other reviews, I think that Geomags are some of the best toys in the world.
They are fun, encourage creativity, and build small motor skills. In addition, you have to pay attention to how magnetic forces work, or your whole structure collapses in a pile. Of course, then you get to start over a little smarter, so it all works out. Nope, this is not for kids who stick random things in their mouths. However, any kid of any age (starting at about 5 and up to well over 63...) can enjoy these, whether they are undertaking major projects or just goofing around. This particular kit is useful because it has a relatively large number of plastic squares, which add stability to structures. All the parts can be combined with other Geomag collections to make greater and grander assemblages.

I ordered this for my daughter for Christmas. I though the toy would be really fun for building. The magnetic pieces are fun and she enjoys the toy, but I thought the panels were magnetic as well so we would be able to have a lot more versatility in building than with just the rods and balls. However, there aren't very many rods and balls to build with and the majority of the kit is just different shapes of the plastic insertable pieces. They don't stay in place very well and you can't build much with the 114 piece set. I would definitely go with only rods next time and not buy the panels, as you could build a lot more for the same amount of money, and the panels are useless unless you have the structure built to pop them into.

I didn't read the information carefully enough. I had purchased Magformers for afterschool programs and mistakenly thought these panels were just that, with the magnets imbedded in the panels. They are actually small magnetic balls and rods with panels. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled similar products due to potential harm to children. I would not let any child under 10 play with this item. See CPSC info about a similar product here. [...]
I plan on sending this back and purchasing Magformers - they have the magnets embedded. |
