5.0 out of 5 stars GPS for Nikon
The unit works fine. It is lacking a solid state COMPASS so you cannot get direction in the photo. You get coordinates and altitude in meters. It does draw over 100 mA (the power 5 standard LEDs would take) when it is on (even when the camera is off). If you leave it on and put your camera away you will have a dead battery when you want to use your camera again. The...

1.0 out of 5 stars Works great when it's not completely broken
Like other people, my unit broke and I am unable to get it repaired or to get a reply from their support department. I actually did get one reply from their support, but when I asked a clarifying question I got no response, which leaves me 1 month into ownership of this somewhat expensive accessory which I bought specifically for a two month trip to Asia and it is now...

It does draw over 100 mA (the power 5 standard LEDs would take) when it is on (even when the camera is off). If you leave it on and put your camera away you will have a dead battery when you want to use your camera again. The LED inside the unit that lets you know it is ON is very difficult to see in daylight. The camera top LCD screen will have a GPS logo if it is on and tracking.

After considering my options, I think getting a GPS data logger to use with software is a better option. For one, it will work with other camera models. I had thought about switching my Nikon out for another camera, but that meant giving up the GPS data provided by this Macsense device.

If you do plan to go with an on-camera GPS, I would advise against this device. It has some design flaws, and it is clearly not made to withstand actual field use.

This little gadget is fantastic. Just plug it in and it works. Nothing to it. Lat/lon and altitude in meters is automatically added to your EXIF data.

If you wish you can use their software which shows your picture in Google Maps. Kinda neat.

No complaints at all.

When it worked, it was just great. But it stopped working after about 3 months during my second field trip. One of the internal data wire was broken which is really rare. Unlike most electronic product has 1 year warranty, this product does not have any warranty. So buying it at your own risk.

I may use my camera with the GPS unit every two months. The first one broke in about 3 months in my second trip. Thanks Amazon to replace it for me. The current one is broken again after a year and half. The idea of this unit is just great. But the quality is so bad and seems that it was produced in the 9th world country.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less than thrilled, March 17, 2009
This review is from: Geometr Gps Receiver Nikon Dslr Realtime Geotag D700 D300 D3 More (Electronics)
It works, in that it supplies GPS data to the EXIF so I can see where I was on Flickr, for instance.

Construction - not so great. The cord was forever getting caught on things and about the 3rd day the cheap flash mount ripped out and I lost it. So now I have it tapped to my camera strap. Ugly, but it works.

You must remember to turn it off or it will drain your battery.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great, but fragile., June 2, 2009
This review is from: Geometr Gps Receiver Nikon Dslr Realtime Geotag D700 D300 D3 More (Electronics)
This product is great and it works really well, however has some major flaws. I bought this product to use on a five week stay in Europe, less than 3 weeks into my trip (and from my date of purchase) I'm stuck with a broken GPS unit. This was stored on my D300 in proper camera bags its entire life and still broke. The 90 degree elbow where the chord plugs into the camera split in two, why would they not use metal?

If you plan on using this sparsely or are willing to absolute baby it then go for it, but otherwise I'd just spend the money and get a Solemeta N2 or something else.

2.0 out of 5 stars mine died as well, November 19, 2009

Seems like a great deal for $80 (saw it is $130 now) compared to the $200 Nikon model. Ergonomics are not great - when it's on your hot shoe it either bangs you in the head or stops the flash from opening, and the cable is too long. Attaching it to the camera strap isn't great either. Didn't have a problem with battery life. and accuracy is very good.
The problem is, on my first multi-day trip, 3 weeks after I got it, it stopped working. Seems like some contacts in the cable broke - it will power on if I jiggle it, but is not usable since it won't stay on. Cable quality is very poor. Just like several other reviewers, contacting support didn't help - other than an auto-reply acknowledging my request I never got a response. Threatening to return the item and writing a bad review didn't help either... luckily I am within my 30 day return window with Amazon, so I will return it for a replacement. Why replacement? Well, I need a GPS on some trips and this is still the cheapest. I will just be very gentle and selective when I am using it and hopefully it will last longer this time...

Update - April 2010
I got my replacement from amazon and it still works. I am being gentle with it, trying to always disconnect it before putting the camera back in the bag. this is slow, and also means it takes more time to re-acquire signal when I am ready to shoot, but still better than nothing.
BTW I found out I did get responses from support, but they went to my junk mail folder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Geotagging product!, November 3, 2008

I read some reviews about this product and decided to purchase it to see what it was all about. I must say I was quite impressed with this product. Not only is it a great tool to pinpoint your exact location on a photo you've taken while traveling, the price that I purchased it was great as well!

Macsense sold me this product at $150. I had a ton of questions to ask since it looked confusing and complicated but the customer service rep was patient with me throughout the process and I'm glad I'm the new owner of the Geomet'r GPS Receiver. =) I would definitely recommend this product!

This little device worked great on a trip to Africa until it broke. The 90 degree connection to the camera is exposed and fragile. I don't know how it broke but now the LEDs will flash for a while and then stop, like an intermittent connection. GPS connection is never locked.

I don't recommend this model. I am trying something else more rugged and reliable.

1.0 out of 5 stars stopped working too, May 9, 2010
This review is from: Geometr Gps Receiver Nikon Dslr Realtime Geotag D700 D300 D3 More (Electronics)
I purchased it when it first was available and it worked. Months later I went to use it on a vacation and it worked for a day or so then stopped working ie gave an error message that it wasn't working with the current settings. I hadn't changed anything and I haven't been able to get it to work again. From doing an internet search, it appears that the connector inside the camera has became loose as I can't get the GPS connector to seat into the camera the way it did in the beginning. Very disappointed as the concept idea is a great one. At the time the GPS unit was about $250 so you can imagine how disgusted I am. IT's likely a design flaw as if one carries one's camera around your neck while hiking, I could imagine bumping into the connector and possibly causing it to jar loose.
