4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting examples of mathematical art., March 19, 2006
This review is from: Geometric Allover Patterns (Dover Pictorial Archive) (Paperback)
The author used a Fortran program to draw a set of lattice patterns that fall into seventeen categories. Each category corresponds to one of the seventeen two-dimensional space groups. The full-page design is created by first constructing a tile. An elementary set of line segments and arcs is taken and then manipulated using a space group. After a tile is created, it is repeated to fill the page.
There are forty-four different designs on these pages and some are quite striking. As someone who has read books on mathematical art across cultures, I recognized some of the patterns. Not exactly, but to a high degree of accuracy. These designs are well worth looking at if you are interested in finding patterns for artwork, quilts or any other visual effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, uniqe designs, March 20, 2008

The designs in this book on the delicate side of geometric design. Some geometry design books can be a bit more pop culture oriented, but this one is not. its focuses far more on the line design and the shapes that pop up between them instead of using a lot of black vs. white optical effects. I use/enjoy this book often.

Just amazing! I really love this one. The intro explains that Dr. Angell wrote some computer programs in Fortran IV language (this book is from 1985). The purpose was to study the mathematical/geometric patterns from ancient cultures. These designs were a by-product of that. These are all framed because they are infinite patterns. Some are angular, some are circular. All kinds of shapes. The lines are quite thin, so bear that in mind if you are a marker person like me. Pencilers don't worry about it. 46 designs to color too. Double sided.
