GD&T text and reference,
By Martin Soll (Estacada, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (Paperback)
I am a college instructor, and have taught classes using this text. It is an excellent choice for use in a classroom setting. The chapters are laid out in a logical order so the student progresses through the concepts in a meaningful manner that leads to thorough understanding of the standard. The diagrams and examples are well designed and explained. The chapter exercises, tests, and drawing problems are useful to the instructor and educational for the students. In addition to being a classroom text, it is a very good reference book for the work place. It will be useful to anyone in the engineering, drafting, inspection, programming and machining departments. The engineer and draftsperson will use this book as a reference to develop drawings that adhere to the ANSI and ASME GD&T standards, and it will assist others in the interpretation of the drawings. I recommend this book to anyone who is taking a GD&T class or wants to teach themselves this very useful standard.

Could be better,
By b00k_eater (SoCal, USA) - See all my reviews

I used this book as a primary text for inspection training, and it does an adequate job of explaining the information. However, it does not quite explain the material as well as some of the other books on the market. Now, if this is your primary text for GD&T application from a design standpoint, immediately file this one in the nearest garbage can and consider: Dimensioning & Tolerancing Handbook by Drake (probably the one to get if you only get one text because it is very comprehensive...even includes stack-up calculations), GD&T Fundamentals by Krulikowski, or Design Dimensioning and Tolerancing by Wilson (this one and the one by Drake are really done with the design application in mind). Bear in mind that the previous texts and the one under review all reference the 1994 revision of the standard (which should be fine because the vast majority of industry has largely ignored the 2009 revision...to date).

i use the book in my drafting class. this work book/text book serves its purpose. a little hard to be doing all those exercises since you have to flip the book back and forth just to do the print reading exercises (having the figure in one page would have been nice or on a separate book)but still a good book in general.

Deficient with respect to 14.5-2009,

This review is from: Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Based on Asme Y14.5-2009 (Paperback)
This review is not intended to be harmful, however... There are many instances of serious technical errors which stand in contrast to the ASME Y14.5-2009. While the author may have been well intentioned, and the graphics are pretty, the text will most likely lead you astray, and leave you or your organization open to litigigous actions. In contrast I recommend the works of Jim Meadows, Bruce Wilson, GD&T, Application and Interpretation, 5th ed (2nd printing), and Don Day, The GD&T hierarchy.

i bought this book like new, and it pretty much was in new condition other than a tiny nudge on the bottom left corner of the book about the size of a needle. Other than that the book was in perfect condition with no torn pages or writing in the book. I got what i payed for and am very pleased with my purchase.

Excellent Book,
This review is from: Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Based on Asme Y14.5-2009 (Paperback)
I have always liked this textbook / workbook for teaching the basics of GD&T, but the new edition of this book is a huge improvement and complies with ASME Y14.5-2009. What I like most about this book is that the author makes a difficult subject as understandable as possible. There are too many instructional books on this subject that are as difficult to understand as the ASME standard. This book covers the basics. It is not a design dimensioning book. I especially like how learning GD&T builds slowly so students develop a solid understanding of basic concepts before moving on into more advanced applications. The first two chapters cover dimensioning and tolerancing terminology, applications and symbols, building a firm foundation before starting into GD&T. I think this is important and should be considered a strength of the book. The GD&T instruction then also builds in a manner that is easy for students to follow and understand. The illustrative drawings are numerous, accurate, and clear with two color accent for quality instruction. Chapter tests provide students with an opportunity for review or for challenging their knowledge. I use this text for drafting students with many chapter ending real-world drawing problems provided to practice GD&T drafting applications. I also use this textbook when teaching GD&T to manufacturing students. The author provides an alternate path for manufacturing students with actual industry prints provided with print reading questions as an alternative to creating drawings. There are alternate tests provided in the Solutions Manual. There are two sets of comprehensive final exams. The ASME Y14.5-2009 edition has the best set of PowerPoint presentations that I have seen. The PPs parallel the text content and provide an excellent teaching aid. There is also a complete set of ExamView tests that correlate with the text.

GD&T,
This review is from: Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Based on Asme Y14.5-2009 (Paperback)
The current revision of this book based on ASME Y14.5-2009 is a great reference book. The chapters of the book follow the revised format of Y14.5-2009 instructing on general dimensioning, tolerancing, and related principles first; followed by symbology and datums. It then discusses the geometric tolerances in the order in which they should be considered for use. It has a lot of examples, great questions and many helpful indications of what is new in the 2009 standard. Many people don't understand or use GD&T properly. This book helps by showing the proper methods to apply GD&T. I wish a book like this was available when I started to learn GD&T many years ago. It would have made it easier. I teach GD&T at my company and I reccomend this book to my students to keep as a guide and to use for reference. I personally use two books for referencing GD&T. This book and the actual ASME tansdard. They are the only two I need.

GD&T Review,
This review is from: Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (Paperback)
This book may be easier to read, but the contents have some issues. I took a class that used this as the manual. I worked at an engineering company. Based on what I learned from the book, I would create drawings using SolidWorks, then they went to the next group to be reiewed. Red lines everytime, all the time for a while. I met up with 4 mechanical engineers and asked for their help. They reviewed this manual and found 6 discrpancies, immediately. I ended up using the manual they had at the time, and the red lines were much less...you could actually see the drawing now. I have thrown that manual (this book) away.
