More About the Author
I have a BA (London), MA (Warwick), PGCE (Lancaster) and Ph.D. (Alberta) where I was a Killam Doctoral Scholar. I have published a wide range of books:
The Reception of Georg Kaiser (New York/Berne: Peter Lang, 1984)
A Conservative Revolution: British Literature of the 1950s (Beijing, 1987)
China: After the Typhoon (Scotland: Tynron Press, 1991)
Graded German Reading (3 packs), (Filey: Cable Education, 2001-02).
Love and Death in the Third World (PA: Baltimore, 2011 and KINDLE ebook, 2011).
I also co-wrote GCSE German, Higher Level Workbook (Newcastle: CGP, 2009) and GCSE German -- Complete Revision and Practice (Newcastle: CGP, 2010). CGP Guides are noted for their humour and I am pleased to say that some of my jokes were accepted!
I have taught at university level in Canada, China and England. In addition, I have published numerous book reviews (Germanic Notes and Reviews) as well as many articles on cinema (world and German) and modern German drama.
A new departure is my first novel for teenagers, a book about boys junior soccer (The Winning Touch), which was published on May 5, 2011 (PA: Baltimore) and has just appeared as a KINDLE and NOOK ebook. I am pleased that it has featured regularly in Amazon UK's bestseller lists and has now started to sell in the US. Because of its popularity (7 bestseller lists), I have just finished writing a sequel about girls football, The Winning Tackle, which is receiving a favourable response from my female trial readers.
My fourth and final article in a mini-series on Fassbinder, which tackles his wonderful TV version of Berlin Alexanderplatz, has just been published by Neophilologus online (Amsterdam). The other articles in the series can be found in Neophilologus (on Effi Briest, 2010), Bright Lights Film Journal (on Petra von Kant, issue 72, May 2011) and in Germanic Notes and Reviews (on Lola, in a future issue, probably Spring 2012).
My new book Zen and The Art of Table Tennis has just come out in printed form (Nov. 2011) and has started to reach online sellers. I am planning to bring out a Kindle version in the near future.
Because a few readers of my Love and Death in the Third World have asked for some more short stories (they must be suckers for punishment), I am now putting together a new collection to be called The Loss of Innocence (they should be out towards the middle of 2012 -- probably later because of football sequel). After my recent trip to Thailand, I now have 15 stories which should be enough for a collection.
Finally, I have started researching a more long-term project, a book on Fassbinder.
