Editorial Reviews

A key early stage in Benson's career was his time spent as Brother Jack's guitarist, and here are the two LPs they made together. Their guitar-organ interplay is outstanding on The Shadow Dancers; Rock-A-Bye; Hippy Dip; I Don't Know; Hot Barbecue , and more!

George Benson and Jack McDuff? I'm sold. Actually Benson isn't so much at the the top of his game (technically) here as compared with the inhumanly fast burning runs on his later releases and maybe neither is Mcduff, but the sounds are retro cool. It is very pleasing to the ear and it is super bluesy and jazzy. If you are familiar with George Benson's more successful releases than you might be a bit disappointed in the lack of flash displayed, but I tend to view it as a more sensitive and subdued Benson. As for Jack he hits all the right spots, and there are at least a couple of tunes where the hooks are all Jack's. Very nice.

Tracks 1-7 From George Bensons 1st solo outing while a member of Jack McDuff's band.He was a kid when McDuff took him on and they played for 3 1/2 years together. Red Holloway apparently schooled him a lot during this time. Original album was "The New Boss Guitar of George Benson " (Prestige 7310)
The second half "Hot Barbeque!" (Prestige 7422)is one of the many fine McDuff releases that feature top notch organ jazz of the 60's that some might find it dated or opportune for your Madman party, I just find it hits the sweet spot,as it has since the Soul Jazz Days when organ outfits like this were plenty, but no better than McDuff's Bands & releases. and with Holloway, Benson and Dukes you cant go wrong. McDuff organ fills are plenty and Benson is playing as he did on most of his McDuff dates, just comping like crazy, so for me I enjoy the second half of this disc with Benson as a sideman more, as, while George Benson was to go on to grow considerably as an artist, it is hard to beat his early wood-shedding here and to my ears he didn't get much better than this. AllMusic gave Hot BBQ 3.5 stars I give it 5. Both CDs can still be found as singles but this twofer is sweet. If McDuff is new to you maybe, this is a good place to start.Any solid rgardless typical '07 Tarantino fine remaster.Rock a Bye and 3 Day Thing never get tiring to my ears.
