5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive Gershwin collection, July 29, 1998
This review is from: By George (Audio CD)
Thanks to my brother for pointing me towards this one. According to him it has "a waaaarrrrgh-tastic rendition of the full orchestral version of Rhapsody in Blue (the sort of thing that blasts through your head when you walk half-way across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan and then, ever so slowly, turn around)."

I have to agree.

It also has some of the best, most heart&gut-wrenching versions of other Gershwin standards ("A Foggy Day", bits of Porgy & Bess, etc.)

Buy it - you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cables Brings Tears to your Soul, April 28, 2000
This review is from: By George (Audio CD)
I first heard a cut of George Cables on Seattle's KING FM classic station, part of his solo concert for the Seattle Art Museum. Even though it was on the car radio, I could tell there was a yearning magic in his playing. I borrowed this CD from a friend. All I can say is "Wow."

George Cables,a widely recognized mainstream pianist, has performed and recorded with many of the great names in jazz over the years.Joe Henderson,Bobby Hutcherson,Woody Shaw,Art Pepper and Freddie Hubbard just to name a few. This recording dedicated to the music of Gershwin is a great example of Cables's prowess and inventiveness. He is joined here by the veteran bassist John Heard, and the very talented drumming of Ralph Penland.Cables is a an excellent arranger for small ensemble settings. He puts good use to these talents on the smokin' interpretations of 'I Got Rhythm',and 'A Foggy Day'.George also presents great solo renditions of 'Embraceable You' and 'Like Someone In Love'.A great performance. This comes highly reccomended.
