Dog lovers will delight in this Scholastic Video Collection compilation of classic canine stories. "Bark, George" is a whimsical story by Jules Feiffer about a dog that meows, oinks, and generally does everything but bark. Feiffer's simple drawings are nicely animated and viewers can't help but chuckle while watching the Veterinarian's comic efforts to cure George. "Dot the Fire Dog" features Lisa Desimini's original still drawings and explores just what firefighters and firedogs do all day and night. An animated "No Roses for Harry" (Gene Zion) follows a cute little white dog with black spots as he cavorts and schemes to get rid of the hand-knit sweater that Grandma made for him. The DVD includes three bonus stories: Mercer Mayer's "A Boy, A Dog, and A Frog" is a classic, wordless, real-life photography piece about a young boy's amusing attempts to catch a frog. Ezra Jack Keats' animated "Whistle for Willie" features a boy intent on learning to whistle for his dog and Marjorie Flack's "Angus Lost," while a dated, real-life photography piece, nonetheless tells a charming story about the wanderings of a mischievous black Scottie dog. The two year old I look after and his six year old sister, love this DVD. Every story is delightful and the story with the frog, is such fun that Henry squeals with delight every time he watches it. A great DVD to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Choice for Young Children Who Like Dogs September 1, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
All the filmed stories come from beloved children's books. My grandchildren aged 5 years and 21 months love the initial cartoonish Bark George story, and laugh out loud. The next story about Dot the Fire Dog is OK (a little dated, reminds me of a very old version of the movie Fahrenheit 451), and teaches some fire safety too. No Roses for Harry is really cute. Grandma makes a dog sweater for Harry and he doesn't like it. He tries to get rid of it. Where it winds up is very funny and the story has a happy ending for everyone. My 21 mo. old grandson is very interested in one of the bonus stories, A Boy, a Dog and a Frog. A young boy keeps trying to catch a frog, with the help of his dog. This is not a cartoon, but has actors. Finally the boy gives up and heads home, hops into a bubble bath with his dog, and guess who follows them home! Angus Lost is another bonus feature, again with actors and a real dog. Set at a time when milkmen delivered to your home, the story is still basically timeless. Dog runs away, dog finds his way home with a lot of luck. There is a bonus story on the DVD called Whistle for Willie, about a boy who wants to learn to whistle for his dog to come. The DVD is 53 minutes in length, every story in full color. A great value and very entertaining for young children.
