Biography

The scope of keyboardist-composer-producer George Duke’s imprint on jazz and pop music over the past forty years is almost impossible to calculate. He has collaborated with some of the most prominent figures in the industry. A producer since the 1980s, he has crafted scores of fine recordings – many of them GRAMMY winners – for artists representing almost every corner ... Read more in Amazon's George Duke Store

4.0 out of 5 stars variety makes this album May 1, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Although this collection is shallow in comparasin to keyboardist/composer/vocalist George Duke's extensive body of work, it is a representative sample of his journeys through the worlds of jazz, funk, R&B and pop during the late '70s and '80s.
Many tracks feature the contributions of legendary bassist Stanley Clarke, who headlined two albums with Duke during the 1980s. The results of their collaborations are excellent and funky to boot; check out their take on the funk classic "Mothership Connection."
Variety rules among the other tracks on this release, "Shine On" flirts with disco, "Starting Again" dabbles in 'quiet storm', and "Sweet Baby" is more pop than one expects from Duke (in fact, I heard it at Walgreens the other day).
The pair of tracks that really sell this release, though, are the funky, funky tracks "Dukey Stick" and "Reach For It." These sound a little dated by today's standards, but outside of Roy Ayers or The Blackbyrds, few late '70s acts could stay as funky in a jazz context as Duke. The are classics, right up there with the aforementioned artists work of the era and that of Parliment and Funkadelic.
If you're a fan of George Duke, contemporary jazz, '80s style R&B, or building up a funk classics library, you'll love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars George at His Best April 23, 2002
Format:Audio CD
George Duke's best are on here. Reach for it, Dukey Stick, Just For You, Sweet Baby, and Shine On are classic crossover hits. I also like George's version of the Mothership connection on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars George is the DUKE! April 11, 1999

Sweet music brings memories to life! Style and score does not disappoint ... I bought the album solely for "Sweet Baby" but the rest of the songs made the purchase even sweeter.

5.0 out of 5 stars It gets even better over successive listenings April 7, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Most of you purchased this CD for "Sweet Baby" (which I didn't know was written by him until very recently), but will be pleasantly surprised if you listen to it all the way through.

There are lots of gems, like "Starting Again" and "Searching My Mind." There's also a song that Dr. Dre sampled-- "Mothership Connection."

Well worth the purchase price of a used CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK Not Great February 22, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It did not have a lot of songs that I liked, but it was okay. I would not buy future CD's without listening to the CD first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic George Duke, unlike any other artist August 6, 2013
By Doc
Format:Audio CD
The influences are varied and pleasant on this collection. I can say that I have only seen one other artist traverse genres over time like 'The Duke' and that was Ray Charles. He did it his way and his live performances could have a different audience each time. He will be missed.
