Music for the kinf most High, December 27, 2006
This review is from: George Frideric Handel: Coronation Anthems/Musick for the Royal Fireworks (Audio CD)
Handel came from Germany to Britain after the lineage and the Crown had passed from the Stuart dynasty to the Hannovers. After the Tudors (Elizabeth I) had produced no hier to the throne, it passed to the line of kings of Scotland, James I being the heir (the same that commissioned the King James version of the Holy Bible). Later, after the period the period of revolt, beheading of Charles I, protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, later rule of Charles II, the line passed to the German relatives. George I initiated the Hanover dynasty. When he came, he didn't speak English, and all the customs of the British court were foreign to him. He commissioned Handel to write music that would soothe him, and thus began Herr Handle's time in the employ of the Hanover court in Britain. The pieces on this CD are wonderful! As the reviewer commented, you get both the set of Anthems commissioned for George I and the Royal Fireworks pieces. The interpretation by Mr. Pinnock is moving. Five stars.
