4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Horse Years 1976-1992

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth Having for George's Music Videos
George Harrison's "Dark Horse Years" DVD does not deliver value for money in terms of overall content. However, it's great to have a commercial release of George's music videos, especially "This Song," "Crackerbox Palace," "Got My Mind Set on You" and "When We Was Fab." George Harrison's "Dark Horse Years" DVD does not deliver value for money in terms of overall content. However, it's great to have a commercial release of George's music videos, especially "This Song," "Crackerbox Palace," "Got My Mind Set on You" and "When We Was Fab." The performance clips from Japan are memorable, yet one wishes the disc included the entire 1992 concert - and we certainly could have done without the "Shanghai Surprise" promo. "Dark Horse Years" is a mixed bag, but recommended to Harrison fans for the long-overdue music videos.

I do not understand this, this mainly due to the shortness of the DVD. There can't be more than an hour worth of content. What I wish they would do is; release the Live In Japan DVD and also a DVD with ALL his videos, including "True Love", "Ding, Dong", "Blow Away", "Save the World", etc. [maybe even include the Traveling Wilbury videos].

All in all, I recommend this to all his "true" fans, as it features some nice intro commentary before his videos.

The release of the DVD has me wondering about a lot of things. First off, this DVD was basically a bonus disc to the "Hark Horse" boxed cd set. That is exactly what it is...bonus material. Perfect for a bonus sampler when it is part of an expensive boxed cd set. Now we have an actual solo release of this DVD with a $24.95 list price which is a lot of money for a disc with little content. Sure, Harrison fans will love the Video's from the Dark Horse Years and the 4 song live set with the Eric Clapton band recorded during their Japan Tour. Those 4 live concert performances are the meat and potatoes of this disc, leaving the viewer wanting more. I ask this question, Do they actually have the entire concert from Japan, which would be the ultimate Harrison DVD, if those 4 live cuts are any indicator of what the rest of the show was like. I feel those live sequences are a teaser, and wouldn't be shocked if down the road we get an entire concert DVD "George Harrison Live In Japan"? I would say, if you are a big George Harrison Fan, you are going to enjoy this sampler DVD, but do not expect too much, because it lacks content, which could have made this a much more worthwhile DVD. I still often wonder why his classic "Concert For Bangladesh", has not been released on DVD as of yet?

3.0 out of 5 stars what a pisser, November 4, 2005
This review is from: George Harrison - Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 (DVD)
Well, I'm not the only one obviously who is a little miffed at how this was originally supposed to be exclusive to the Dark Horse CD boxset as a bonus - now available on its own. I could have saved a bundle by buying the remastered albums separately, then get this dvd (plus much better packaging, since the dvd was originally tucked into the back of a collectible cd-sized hardback book).

But I bought the way overpriced collector's edition cd box because I wanted this dvd. If they had added some extra material to the separate release, I wouldve rebought it in fact, and I think many George fans would have too. The dvd as it has some great stuff, esp. the Live in Japan performances which sounded way better on the dvd in surround sound than the live album tracks do. I would love to have a full concert. Also the videos are mostly fun to watch but as it has been pointed out where the heck are the other ones? No, I don't even mean the Wilburys because I hear they are planning a re-issue of the all the Wilburys stuff and with any luck the videos will be on a dvd. But some of George's videos from this period are MIA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Horse Years... the best., November 4, 2004
This review is from: George Harrison - Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 (DVD)
I first saw the content on this DVD when it was released as part of the Dark Horse Years box set early in 2004. I have to say that it is very good. The interviews and back story to the Dark Horse Years is very interesting, and the videos from the albums are interesting pieces of George Harrison's tastes and music.

In the end though, if you already have the box set this is a superfluous purchase, and this might be more for die-hard fans, and not for the general passer-by.

Five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it five stars, October 29, 2005

I am a HUGE fan of George Harrison and was thrilled when I learned of this DVD. The content is worth five stars. The reason the DVD is not is because of the length. Several clips of interviews shown which have clearly been editted. It would have been so much better if the whole interview had been covered. I also agree with the other reviewers who stated the concert sequence was great, but a tease for more. It would have been five plus stars if it had included the Wilburys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, June 23, 2006

This review is from: George Harrison - Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 (DVD)
This DVD could have garnered 5 stars from me but the video to "Blow Away", from George's excellent 1979 "George Harrison" album, is missing! I'm not 100% positive, but I'd have to imagine there was also a video for "Love Comes To Everyone" off of the same album.... and what about the video for "All Those Years Ago" from "Somewhere In England"??? Why are these important pieces of George's Dark Horse years omitted?

Videos of "Crackerbox Palace" and "This Song" are worth the price of admission, alone. But I'd have rather seen the above mentioned videos included instead of stuff from "Shanghai Surprise".

Good, but it could have been fantastic - and it should have been.

This is a very weak release!!! The interviews and/or commentary between videos are just OK but, this DVD is lacking content!!! There is not that much here at all!! What about a release of the full Japan show or some other concert????

I like the DVD, in spite of all the material that wasn't included, but it was supposed to be a BONUS for buying the overpriced box set. I already have all of George's stuff on vinyl and CD. I could have bought all the remastered CDs for half of what the boxed set cost, but I forked over my money once again to get the Bonus DVD. Now they sell it individually? It's a slap in the face for the diehard fans.

If you didn't buy the boxed Harrison collection, get the DVD. I think they should give those of us who bught the box set a refund. It was bad enough getting ripped off by Capitol when they butchered the Beatles albums in the U.S., now Dark Horse is ripping the fans off? Shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE DARK HORSE YEARS, October 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: George Harrison - Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 (DVD)
The Dark Horse Years does have its moments of interest. The live performance clips from Japan have to be a major high point in this collection, though the few videos from that tour makes one long for a full DVD release of the concert. Maybe at some point that will happen. And the collection of music videos from his Dark Horse albums are fun to see again. Why, however, were the videos of "Blow Away", and "All Those Years Ago" not also included? It is good hearing George talk about his music also throughout portions of the disc. Still, a fitting artifact in reminiscing about a music legend.
