T.S. Eliot considered Herbert's religious verse above John Donne's and placed him firmly in the ranks of thegreat English poets. Peter Porter's new introduction gives a fresh perspective on the poetry of Herbert and on Eliot's study itself.

This review is from: George Herbert (Writers and their Work) (Paperback)
When I first read the English metaphysical poets of the early 17th century, they knocked my socks off. They had a similar effect on T.S. Eliot, although he may have had a more refined way of expressing his impressions--see his masterpiece, "The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry."Eminently worth studying for any poet or any Christian.
