Book Description

January 3, 2012
A funny and intimate portrait of a relationshipgleaned from the author and his fianceé’s couple’s therapy sessions.

After roughly three-and-a-half years of dating his girlfriend Hilly, New York Observer nightlife and society reporter George Gurley decided that it was time to get married. Well, engaged. No rush. One day at a time. George had witnessed New York husbands —frail, meek, ashamed, and henpecked, pushing double wide strollers as their battle-ax wives babbled on about “dinner with friends”—and it wasn’t for him.

Enter Dr. Selman: psychiatrist, obliging listener, and unwitting participant in George’s own journalistic project—a no-holds-barred portrait of intimacy taken from transcripts of the couple’s therapy sessions. George can be compared to a Carrie Bradshaw 2.0; that is, if Carrie were a hard drinking, ill-reputed man-about-town writing frankly about sex, love, marriage, and his own psychological baggage.

Hilarious, thought-provoking, and compelling,  George & Hilly  reveals the uncensored, unselfconscious psyche of a man on the brink of matrimony.

“A pleasure to read. As Huey Long said about himself, 'sui generis.' I can already see the marquee: GEORGE 'n' HILLY TONIGHT!" --Tom Wolfe

I wish more people had the courage to write like this. A combination of Dominick Dunne and Salinger sprinkled with a humanized sense of self deprecation and humor. Perhaps not for the Dan Brown fans of the world, but definitely for those who appreciate a thought provoking read. Keep them coming Mr. Gurley. Two thumbs way up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book February 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up at a friend's house and could not put it down. I don't have as much time to read as I used to, so a book has got to get me right away and make me not want to turn off the bedroom reading lamp.

Gurley is an entertaining writer and very on point with his observations.

In my opinion, this book is the equivalent of Sex in the City but told from a guy's perspective and seems mostly genuine. It's totally entertaining on many levels. I don't think that I have ever really read a book about relationships from this male vantage point. How many men do you know who are straight and want to talk about their relationship in such detail... zero... right? In some ways I felt like I was spying into the male psyche. This should be required reading for women who want to know more about what the other half is thinking.

There were parts of the book where I literally flinched, laughed and got pissed off... either because it was a gross description of his apartment, a recounting of an adventure out or something so selfish that I wanted to reach into the book and shake him.

If you want an easy read, a good laugh and an authentic take on the modern relationship in the big city from a guy's perspective, this is it. It's a great departure from the chick lit that I also like to read. Two thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright Lights, Big City Meets Sex and the City April 10, 2012

For years, George's articles were my favorite part of the New York Observer. When he interviewed celebrities, his bits of the conversation were usually the most interesting part of the piece! I couldn't wait for the book, and I read it in two hours. It's the story of a hard partying reporter and his long-suffering girlfriend, and his descriptions of the ups and downs of his relationship, as well as the hilarious situations he gets himself into (hungover with a baby panda) will make you laugh, cry, want to slap him and want to give him a hug all at the same time. I wish there were more male narrators with George's sophistication, wit, and gift for spot-on observation. Bring on the movie!
