Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-George Hogglesberry, a new second grader who has just come from the planet Frollop II, gets directions and everything else all mixed up. Things in his new school and home are so different from his former life that he worries about not being accepted, although the class rallies to help him. He has to be reminded not to walk on the ceiling, and when he floats upside down he loses his shoes. Worst of all, no one ever knows where he is going to turn up, not even George. Finally, his teacher helps him with a part in the school play and he charms everyone. This offbeat story is enhanced by colorful, quirky illustrations of the young alien as he tries to fit in. Readers see him taping a nose to his face ("Everyone else had a nose"), "but his ears were always falling off." Youngsters entering a new school and lacking self-confidence might find George's bizarre situation humorous and reassuring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Whimsy, December 21, 2002

This review is from: George Hogglesberry, Grade School Alien (Golden Kite Awards) (Hardcover)
I read this book with a 5-year old starting school. George's story is very accessible, and the details of his life are so wonderfully and creatively silly, that both adult and child were sincerely giggling at every page. Chad Cameron's illustrations are artful and fanciful -- he has a profound visual sense of humor. This book would be wonderful for any kid, and especially those working through an adjustment to a new school (or home?) situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too funny!, June 2, 2011

George is trying to adjust to a new planet. His first challenge is to fit in at school. The story is oh-so-funny and with the illustrations, it's twice as funny. Plus, there is a little game on the book cover that readers can play. Every kindergarten and first grade should have this book.
