Editorial Reviews

Review

Years ago, writer-photographer Mark A. Vieira wrote and compiled a handsome book called Hurrell’s Hollywood Portraits. This enormous and elegant volume supersedes it, not only in the quantity and quality of photographs it presents, but in Vieira’s candid text, which expands on his earlier work and delves into the second part of Hurrell’s life... I think it’s fair to refer to this exquisite tome as definitive.
- Leonard Maltin

“A stunning collection of Hollywood portraits by George Hurrell, accompanied by an exploration of his life and career.”

Gorgeous coffee table book!
C. Miller
One word of warning, though--book weighs a ton, so be sure you get comfortable when you get set to read or just leaf through looking at the drop-dead beautiful photos.
Francesca M. Belanger
This has got to be the ultimate George Hurrell book; a stupendous collection of the famed photographer's work during the golden years of Hollywood.

This is a truly exquisite book, it's large, thick and the production values are top-notch.
The book is the most comprehensive photographic account of Hurrell's amazing portraits. It contains hundreds of large crisp clear b/w portraits many of them have never been published before along with a couple of color photos as well.
The book is divided into chapters chronicling Hurrell's career and style. The text gives the right amount of information, while leaving the beautiful photos to speak for themselves.
This book is a must for all fans of Hollywood's lost glamour era and anyone appreciating beautiful photography.
Mr.Vieira and Running Press did a marvelous job producing this magnificent tome.

This coffee-table size book contains some of the most beautiful photographs of Hollywood stars I have ever seen. The photos were taken by famed Hollywood photographer George Hurrell. The book is also a biography of Hurrell. The photos are beautifully reproduced and the story of Hurrell is quite interesting. He went back and forth from being an independent photographer to the various studios including MGM, Fox, Warners, and Columbia. However, all he really wanted to be was a painter. The book contains photos from silent star Ramon Novarro through Paul McCartney and Sharon Stone. There are a great number of photos of Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer (Hurrell’s most frequent clients) and a few of the great male stars including Gable, Flynn, Stewart, Cagney, and Bogart. Highly recommended for anyone who values the artistry of portrait photography and loves the age of classic films and the era when stars were really stars.

Mark Vieira, the foremost Hollywood historian of our time has produced the most beautiful and comprehensive history of the master of Hollywood glamour, "George Hurrell's Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925 - 1992". This large format book has been painstakingly printed by The Running Press to produce the most lifelike appearing photographs from the tumultuous career of George Hurrell. Many of the photographs included have not been printed or published since the time they were produced under the masterful eye of George Hurrell. Mr Vieira's anecdotes and accounts of the photographer's life are engaging and will provide hours of engrossing entertainment. The photographs are in themselves a stunning history of the glamour days that defined the Golden and Silver Ages of Hollywood. This spectacular book will find a prominent place in your home not to be stored away but to be viewed and enjoyed by all. Mark Vieira's writing and book producing skills have never been keener. Don't miss this beautiful book, add it to your collection this season. George Hurrell's Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925-1992.

I have been a major Hollywood glamor collector since I was 11 years old and have all of our favorite movie picture books (A World of Movies, Image Makers, Four fabulous Faces, Grand Illusions), etc. NONE of them can compare to 'George Hurrell's Hollwywood', not even the book of his work that he was personally involved in. This book is not only a book, but an "experience."

The photography quality is so crystal clear and so beautiful, it is often startling. The tones are breath taking in their perfection.
There are close to 400 pages of photos of most every name you can imagine, especially the greats. I have seen a lot in my time (I used to work at a major movie memorabilia store for 4 years) and many of these photos I have never seen before. Staggeringly beautiful shots of Crawford can be found throughout (lots of her in here!), as well as Harlow (more of her is included than you are used to seeing from her Hurrell sessions), as well as very rare Mae West's showing that in fact she really was a beauty, and lots of Norma Shearer and Garbo.

One shot of Robert Taylor (page 311) is so lifelike it is as if he's there in person, looking at you. Had the image been any larger than 4X6 I might felt compelled to get up and at LEAST put on a bath robe!

Then...there is the text. Wow. Not the usual brief descriptions or captions as seen in other books, but true and fascinating behind- the-scenes stories of many of the famous photo shoots. We learn all KINDS of interesting things about the old stars and how certain beloved photographs came to be; the music played during the shoots, the quirks, difficulties, lighting techniques, etc. Some anecdotes are very funny.

When I read a Mark Vieira book, I always come to the same conclusion - it's the best he's ever done. Then he turns around and writes yet another 'best ever', every time. And so it is with 'George Hurrells Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925-1992'. Once I started reading, I simply couldn't stop - the text, the photographs, absolutely exquisite. Mark Vieira is one of my most favorite authors, and there's a reason for that - he's good at what he does. One of the best!

This is one of the finest photography books that I have encountered in a long time. It not only contains great images but also insits into George's life and the world of Hollywood Starlets.
