5.0 out of 5 stars a great full-length clip fest, January 24, 2004
This review is from: Golden Hits [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This home video arrived in 1994, which was the 40th Anniversary of George's professional recording career {having been signed to a label non-stop since 1954}. The video opens up with George greeting us and telling us about the home video. however, the first 'song' is a small clip of "The Grand Tour" during his famed Live in Tennessee home video from 1993 and therefore not a performance from 1974 or 1975, the era when the single was a hit. Also, "White Lightnin" is shown from an early '60s TV show and not from 1959 when the song was released. "The Race is On" and "Walk Through This World With Me" from 1964 and 1967 come from a country show in the late '60s. The year jumps from 1967 to 1974 and we see George on Pop Goes The Country singing "The Door". George tells us that it was a single that the public wanted to hear when they were by theirself because it was "too personal" for many who had family and friends in Vietnam. His Tammy-era is showcased with two performances in 1977 of "Golden Ring" and "Near You". Then we see the early '80s George. This George dressed LESS formal than he once did. The performance of "Bartender's Blues" on this home video is from the early '80s because on another video i have, on that same show, he performs "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Speaking of that #1 song, it also follows "Bartender's Blues" on this home video too. This performance, however, comes from an awards show...George is decked out in a grey/white suit and flashy rings on his finers and he's performing without his guitar!! he does Conway Twitty-style moves as he bends his head forward in certain parts of the song. We next see him in a more toned down look, in a blue suit, singing "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me"...in which he slips in during the last line of the song: "and If Drinking don't kill me, Tammy's memory will..." and he starts to laugh as the camera pulls away. This home video is the only place to find a full-length performance of that song with that often quoted ad-libbed lyric (it hit #8 in early 1981). The next two performances are from PBS-TV's "Austin City Limits" in 1987. He performs his 1983 #1 "I Always Get Lucky With You" and 1985's #3 "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?". The video closes with his 1993 performance of "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" (a #34 hit in early 1993). Remember, all through this home video after every song, it cuts away to George {circa 1994} talking about the songs and their impact on his career and his fans. a wonderful home video companion to 1989's "Same Ole Me" home video and 1987's "Living Legend in Concert".

5.0 out of 5 stars GEORGE IS THE GREATEST, September 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Golden Hits [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It is my considered belief that the three greatest musical performers of the century are: (3)TINY TIM, (2)GG ALLIN, and (1)GEORGE JONES. This video compilation is as gem from start to finish, and unlike most artists (in any genre you'd care to mention, not just music) he actually gets better as he gets older. If you're new to George, I would recommend all of his recordings, but start with anything post-1968. As a matter of fact start with this video. And while you're about it pick up everything you can get your hands on by Tiny Tim, and by GG ALLIN. Also look into George's life: he certainly has lived out his songs. GEORGE JONES #1 - GG ROCK - TINY TIM - JEANNIE C. RILEY - BROOKE.
