Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the self-titled album from R&B vocalist George McCrae. Following the huge success of Rock Your Baby, Grammy Award Nominee, McCrae followed with the release of his self-titled second solo effort in 1975. While the album was well received in the US, placing on the Billboard Hot 200 Pop chart and #24 on the US R&B chart, it was the in the UK where the album was particularly well received with the album reaching #54 in the UK Pop charts and the singles doing even better. BBR.

It seems that George was not the first choice to record Rock your baby. It was written for KC and the Sunshine band, but despite the lead singer of that group being a co-writer, it proved to be unsuitable, so another singer was sought. Gwen McCrae (George's wife) was then chosen but didn't turn up for the recording session. George therefore recorded Rock your baby, which subsequently became a number one hit in Britain and America. How lucky can one man be?

Subsequent releases made less impact, especially in America. George nevertheless managed to make the UK top ten twice more (I can't leave you alone, It's been so long) and just missed the UK top ten with I ain't lying. George also had three minor UK hits (You can have it all, Sing a happy song, Honey). All these hits came in the period 1974 to 1976 and all except Honey are included here. George eventually had a minor hit (One step closer to love) on a different label but that (like Honey) is missing.

Neither of the missing hits matter on this collection, which contains everything you are likely to need by one of the pioneers of the seventies disco scene.

George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby" was one of those seductively catchy songs that still sounds great many years later. But McCrae was more than a one-hit wonder, as this compilation demonstrates. Tunes such as "I Can't Leave You Alone", "It's Been So Long," and "I Get Lifted" are also the stick-in-your-head types. This 18-song compilation has just about all you need to hear by McCrae. Nearly all the songs on here were written by Casey & Finch, the two guys responsible for KC and the Sunshine Band, thus not surprisingly, some of the material on here DOES remind the listener of KC and the Sunshine Band, particularly the horn section. The only downside to that condition, is the some of the tunes on here tend to sound slightly repetitive. One odd thing about this compilation are the songwriting credits; for three tracks, the writer is listed as "Unknown." How can that be? This material all comes from the mid to late 70s, so it's not like the writer of the songs should be a mystery. Considering that a major label like EMI is responsible for this compilation, such an oversight, or lack of digging for details, is inexcusable. Nevertheless, this is (or should be) a budget priced CD and is worth the purchase to hear some of these joful songs again.

Just got finished listening to this CD. Sharon's favorite is the six minute version of "Rock Your Baby" and "I Get Lifted." I like all 17 selections, but those 2 are definitely the best.
