4.0 out of 5 stars Great stories, but...
...the Phantastes story does not have the original quotes that preceded each chapter's events. I found the quotes and passages added to the understanding of the events, but they are omitted here.

1.0 out of 5 stars An edited version...not what I expected, September 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The George McDonald Treasury: Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie, Light Princess, Phantastes, Giant's Heart, At the Back of the North Wind, Golden Key, and Lilith (Paperback)
Buyers beware...None of the marketing on Amazon says that this is an edited version but it is definately edited! Even when I opened the book, the first of two title pages said: The George MacDonald Treasury and then listed the tales in the book and at the bottom states, by George MacDonald...good so far but the SECOND title page repeats all the same information as the first and then adds below, Edited by Glenn Kahley. This incomplete marketing by Amazon and the misrepresentation on the first title page seems a little deceptive to me. If you are going to edit a book, state so clearly.

Also a point of interest to lovers of George MacDonald's works: In the original tale of Princess and the Goblin, George MacDonald speaks to the reader about how every little girl is a princess because they are the daughter of a King, but that is removed from this EDITED version. I didn't read more because I didn't need to see what other important information had been removed to know I needed to return this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars treasure indeed, June 19, 2008
By
This review is from: The George McDonald Treasury: Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie, Light Princess, Phantastes, Giant's Heart, At the Back of the North Wind, Golden Key, and Lilith (Paperback)
McDonald has an amazing way of looking at the ordinary and making it anything but. Great books to stimulate the imagination with wonder and delight. Great stories for all ages, I grew up reading these and still love to read them. My only criticism of this edition is the overall poor quality of the binding and printing. Don't judge the book by its cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful anthology, August 14, 2008
This review is from: The George McDonald Treasury: Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie, Light Princess, Phantastes, Giant's Heart, At the Back of the North Wind, Golden Key, and Lilith (Paperback)
I'm not an English Literature major. I just enjoy good stories. This anthology is thoroughly wonderful. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys well written children's stories and fantasy. I wish the editors had included some background material. How I long to visit fairy land!

4.0 out of 5 stars George MacDonald Treasury, November 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The George McDonald Treasury: Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie, Light Princess, Phantastes, Giant's Heart, At the Back of the North Wind, Golden Key, and Lilith (Paperback)
I enjoyed having all of MacDonald's works in one book, but there were many errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. This was annoying and almost seemed like the editors did not care (This is seen by the Amazon spelling of MacDonald's name as "McDonald". I am not loving it!). Otherwise, it is a great addition because of the price. It is textbook size, so if you expect something easily carried beware. I LOVE MacDonald!

2.0 out of 5 stars The content is excellent -- it's just the edition!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: The George McDonald Treasury: Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie, Light Princess, Phantastes, Giant's Heart, At the Back of the North Wind, Golden Key, and Lilith (Paperback)
No pictures and I kept running across annoying typos. However, it's an easy way to get a lot of McDonald's excellent works in one place. The typeface is attractive. It's a big book and unwieldy. I would rather have gotten each of the books separately in good quality, beautifully illustrated editions.

Great book if you are new to George MacDonald and want to read some of his most popular stories. Yes, the print quality isnt the best; but its good enough to read through before purchasing keepsake editions of your favorite stories. And dont stop here, get his "Unspoken Sermons" book for some real enlightment!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Format Too Large for Easy Reading, December 3, 2009

I received this as a gift. The stories are wonderful (do get them), but the book is quite big with wide pages.
In retrospect, I would have preferred to have something like a boxed set (which I don't know if that is available) - with individual books you can take out one at a time. I would have preferred narrower smaller pages.

If you're interested in George MacDonald's fantasies, this is the book to get. The production quality was far better than I expected from other reviews. I find the print quite readable, the binding very acceptable, and though there are some typos, they are not as abundant as other reviewers led me to believe. I don't see any reason to buy these novels individually when you can get them here much cheaper. My only complaint is that The Portent (sometimes known as The Lady of the Mansion), a border-line fantasy/gothic, was not included.

This book was a real find for me. I have long been a fan of McDonald's writing but had just been introduced to his fantansy stories and was very excited to find them all in one volume.
I can see why he was an inspiration to CS Lewis.
