Smart Woman!, October 4, 2010
This review is from: George Meredith and his German critics, (Hardcover)
This book contains a chapter discussing the views of my grandmother (in law), Dr. Erna Fuchs-Bierig of Dusseldorf, on the subject of George Merdith. These were based on her doctoral dissertation, which was later published, called Frauengestalten bei George Meredith. She went on to teach English, refusing during the Nazi period to give the Hitler salute in class. After the war she met my biological grandparent. Peter Paul Fuchs when he was put in charge by the Allies of running Dusseldorf after the war, and needed an English translator. He learned English, became the only German on the War Reparations court in Erfurt, and married Dr. Bierig. As this book shows Erna Fuchs-Bierig was a woman of smart opinions, and was also, by the way, a fine duo partner in Mozart four-hand sonatas too.
