Book Description

October 1, 1996
The George Mitchell story is classic in its devotion to hard work and individual initiative, as well as inspirational in its simplicity.By keeping in close touch with the Maine voters, listening to their ideas and viewpoints, he gained their trust and respect. As Democratic Senator from Maine, he began his public career without having been elected to any local, state, or national office. In 1980, he was appointed by Maine's Governor Joseph Brennan to fill the unexpired term of Senator Edmund Muskie. At the next election, George Mitchell won his own seat in the US Senate. After serving only eight years, the Democratic majority handed him the second most powerful position in the country, the gavel of the Senate Majority Leader.

5.0 out of 5 stars An informative, superbly written political biography., August 6, 2000
This review is from: George Mitchell; In Search of Peace (Hardcover)
In Search Of Peace, George Mitchell, Alberta Gould offers a compelling and informative biography of the former Democratic Senator from Main, George Mitchell. Originally appointed in 1980 by Maine's Governor Joseph Brennan to fill the unexpired term of Senator Edmund Muskie, Mitchell won his own seat in the United State Senate at the next election. Upon serving eight years in that august body, Mitchell was made Senate Majority Leader, after the President, the most powerful political position in the country. While an excellent political biography, Gould reveals George Mitchell as an outstanding and dedicated humanitarian which would eventually lead him to a post-senatorial role of international peace maker in Northern Ireland.
