Format: Audio CD
The music of George Onslow is slowly coming out of obscurity and that's good. He wrote wonderful chamber music, in a style that made Onslow something like the French Schubert, in a country - France - and an era - the early 19th Century - where and when fashion was the opera and chamber music considered a high-browed pleasure for a limited elite. No wonder Onslow was very famous in his days - but not in his home country: in Germany, Austria and England. The three Violin and Piano Sonatas opus 16 are not at such a level of quality I am afraid. They were composed in 1819 and published a year later in Vienna, say the liner notes (but the online catalog of Bibliothèque Nationale de France indicates a first publication in France by Pleyel in 1820). They also claim that "the string instrument printed on the score is designated as `violin, viola or violoncello'", but I'm not sure the story is that simple. They are listed as Sonatas for Cello and Piano by the Association George Onslow, and facsimiles of various scores are available on the International Music Scores Library Project, where they appear also as Cello-Piano sonatas, but with an alternate viola part. Only for the 3rd Sonata is there also a score for Violin and Piano, published by S.A. Steiner of Vienna. The version for Viola and Piano has been recorded by Pierre Franck and François-Joël Thiollier on Pierre Verany, Sonatas for Viola & Piano (it's been reissued by Arion, not listed here but listed on the French sister company under ASIN B00002403D).

The model of Beethoven looms large (he was, with Haydn, Onslow's God), but regrettably Onslow doesn't have the same talent, not here at least.
