I actually buy these books for my grandchildren. I have found Barron's guides the best.

On July 12, a reader from "somewhere" expressed distain for 1984, partly on the basis that Orwell's plot was lifted from Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel "We." Seems unlikely. 1984 was published in 1949, while the first printing of "We" was in Russian, in 1952! Orwell was the firstest with the mostest, in my opinion.

This book is almost like my bible. After the Denver police departments decision to use hidden cameras to catch speeders and red light violations, I beame instantly chilled. I was somewhat captivated by how modern America is becoming very much like like Orwell's totalitarian society, and have decided to reread this book yet again. Do not be fooled by bad reviews. This book will make you think if you take it with an open mind, and scare you into beleiving what is possible. Do not be rushed to read this book. Compare and contrast and think.

What is Orwell trying to say, and why is it so important?,

I had only heard of 1984 when people talked about 'Big Brother' and such thing like that. It wasn't until my Junior year in High School that I sat down and read the book. I couldn't put it down. It gave me so much to think about. I could see what Orwell was trying to say, and I was horrified at the possibabilty of the world he portrayed. With its dark images and horrific torture it truly made you afraid. I'm just glad that people, who have read 1984, realize the message Orwell was sending and see it as a warning. While I realize a political book isn't everyones cup of tea, I encourage everyone to get and read this book. It truely makes you greatful for the freedoms we have and those we take for granted.

A superb book, that would be a blessing to anyones shelves! A truly divine description of humanity's true nature, and a very disturbing story to boot. One could be fooled into believing the book a metaphor for Stalinist Russia, however this book will draw you time and time again, until you draw your own deep meaning from its passages
