New Music for people who don't like New Music,

This review is from: George Perle: Complete Wind Quintets (Audio CD)
George Perle's music has been a too-well-kept secret. He is perhaps best known for his musicological work on Alban Berg, but he should be known for his compositions. His use of the 12-tone system is free and non-dogmatic. Harmonies and counterpoint make sense in an indisputable and deeply expressive way. And overall, the music is suffused with high spirits and goodwill. I can't think of wind quintets which better show the form's possibilities.
The performances themselves are marvelous. The music requires players who are nimble, and the Dorian Quintet rises to this challenge with apparent ease.

Brilliant chamber music,
By Zachary Young (New Orleans, LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: George Perle: Complete Wind Quintets (Audio CD)
George Perle's unique serial style really shines in this setting. The timbral variety of the wind quintet makes every chord and every jagged rhythm come alive. I am not aware of any other recordings of these pieces, so I have little basis for comparison - but that hardly seems to matter, because I really enjoy this album.
