Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

After the publication of George Platt Lynes: Photographs from the Kinsey Institute (LJ 11/1/93) and a touring show of Lynes's photography in 1994, this once-forgotten American photographer seems to be regaining recognition. Particularly with this volume, the artist proves deserving of rediscovery. While Portraits does not carry the insightful essay or range of photographs included in the Kinsey collection's book, it does highlight the photgrapher's very best work, reproduced as lavish, full-page, sheet-fed gravures. With subjects including Paul Cadmus, Gertrude Stein, and Igor Stravinsky, the photos show the full range of Lynes's stylistic pallette, indicating the influence of surrealism, his fashion- and dance-photography innovations, and his experiments with the nude form. A worthy addition to larger photography collections.

2.0 out of 5 stars A slim book of grainy photographs, November 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: George Platt Lynes Portraits 1927-1955 (Hardcover)
Back in the 1980's. I was given a book of George Platt Lynes' photographs as a birthday present. It was a superb collection which I lost when I moved from Boston to Portland, OR back in 1990. I have recently begun trying to locate a similar book of Lynes' work. This book isn't it. The portraits are interesting enough but I do not understand why this book is so intentionally grainy in quality and so very slim! It's a good book for those interested in photography in general, but I feel it will be a disappointment to those who already appreciate the greatness of George Platt Lynes.

This review is from: George Platt Lynes Portraits 1927-1955 (Hardcover)
In this black and white book (1994), the moody photographs are almost full page. They are matte finish, not glossy, and certainly not grainy. The book was printed in Japan and there are no page numbers and no Index. Lincoln Kirstein provides a short introduction. There's a Selected Bibliography; a Chronology for Lynes (1907-1955; prior to his death from lung cancer, he destroyed large portions of his negative and print archives); and Acknowledgements (many of the photos herein were preserved by friends over the years, but there are also sizable collections elsewhere). Lynes and his circle are well covered in David Leddick, Intimate Companions, paper 2001).
