Book Description

February 15, 2007
Presenting both indoor and outdoor work, this volume examines the depth and breadth of George Rickey's sculptural oeuvre between 1950 and 2000 and its place in the history of American art. Trained originally as a painter, George Rickey turned to sculpture in 1949. In 1964 his kinetic piece Two Lines Temporal "established him internationally as a major figure in the history of kinetic sculpture," according to art historian Nan Rosenthal. In 1966 he gave up teaching to devote himself entirely to his creative work. The recipient of 10 honorary doctorate degrees and many awards and honors, George Rickey built a stellar career as an exhibiting artist, author, and professor of art in the U.S. and abroad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of a major American sculptor, December 1, 2007

This review is from: George Rickey: Kinetic Sculpture, A Retrospective (Hardcover)
This handsome book provides an important resource for artists and collectors. It is a fitting tribute to a major artist. The essays are good additions to the book. Though they are not particularly scholarly, they are informative. The illustrations are excellent.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: George Rickey: Kinetic Sculpture, A Retrospective (Hardcover)
This is a useful, well-produced addition to the literature on George Rickey.
George Rickey

I'm not sure why Kevin Sharp is listed as the author, since his name does not appear anywhere in the book.

Proper credits:

The forward was written by the book's general editor Lucinda Gedeon,
Ellen Feldman and Birgit Mieschanz are listed as editors, with Mieschanz
as compiler of the very informative chronology and the list of works
in public collections.

Valerie Fletcher wrote the graceful, 22 page essay that sets the tone for the book.

Phil Rickey, himself an accomplished sculptor, contributed 4-page reflection on his father's work.
