Frequent use has been made of the earlier biographies by his son, the Rev. John Romney, and his bosom friend, VVilliam Hayley, as these, in spite of their prolixity, contain hy far the fullest details of Romney's personal history. The lite of a pltinter who is completely wrapped up in his art, as Romney was, is usually an uneventful one; but it is, neveltheless, when the painter in question is a m~m of 'genius, of very real interest to those who httve come under his spell. By many Romney is still regarded merely ns the man who painted and loved Lady Hamilton and deserted his own wife for more than thilty years-an inaccurate and exaggernted sununal'Y of his life, based upon insufficient knowledge.
