A prolific writer, she began with romantic fiction, then turned to novels of social reform and rounded out her forty-five years of writing with pastoral tales that have become classics, producing one hundred and ten volumes in all. She lived a life, which some believe was full of contradictions, but in retrospect she was a woman one hundred years ahead of her time.
