According to (former Cleveland chief music critic) Donald Rosenberg's "Second To None"---the objective, balanced and highly recommended history of Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra---this "documentary" was staged to put Szell in the best possible light as a kind(er), grandfatherly supreme figure (thus the title) while shortchanging the immense importance of the orchestra, which was loaded with individual talents. Szell didn't act this way with the cameras off. It was much more complex with Szell, the orchestra, and his relationship with his group. It would be enlightening for former members of the orchestra to give their accounts of this session.

Look past this reality, and the document still has value. There is no questioning the mastery displayed by this great conductor and this never-to-equalled orchestra. Just don't mistake it for candid.

Despite the rather hoky nature of the presentation of the Bell telephone Hour, as you would expect from 45 years ago, this is a magnificent document of how a great conductor works. The sound is adequate but what shines through is the fact that Szell works as one with the orchestra in rehearsal, honing, crafting and balancing the performance. They respond superbly of course but Szell doesn't give a performance while in rehearsal, a mistake so many conductors make today. He saves it for the night and what a performance it is. The tension, drama and sheer theatrical power of a well drilled rehearsal comes through, as it should. The other aspect of this DVD is the warmth that he shows towards the music and his musicians. All the stories of Szell's coldness are flung out the window. He was a simply great conductor, dedicated and self-deprecating.
There are many other highlights on the disc but the Beethoven is the star attraction, all aspiring conductors should see it.

It shows the outstanding ability of an amazing conductor to build an orchestra into one of the world's finest with superb musicianship. Terrific insight.

Szell was one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century, and this DVD gets out of his way and lets him--and his music--speak for themselves.

I love everything from r&b to techno to mash-ups to jazz to standards to classical. This is one of the finest music videos -- of any genre -- ever recorded. George Szell, one of the greatest conductors, the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the greatest ensembles of musicians -- together, they made history. This recording documents the miracle of 100 people responding as one to one man, out of mutual love and respect. And this Bell Telephone Hour, in its excellence, shows the difference between network TV audiences then and now. If, for you, the music is forever, then you owe it to yourself to get this one.
