5.0 out of 5 stars Seasoned Country Is Like Fine Wine, November 30, 1999

This review is from: George & Tammy - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Even if you are not an oldies country fan, give a listen and you will be with this set from George Jones and Tammy Wynette. You will find Country Oldies are like fine wine. As they become seasoned with age, the better they are to the pallet sounds of listening enjoyment and memory taking. Makes for starting a geat collection too.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Country Was...And Ought To Be, January 8, 2002

It's all here...the musical embodiment of the highs and lows of a legendary pairing and a marriage gone bad. Both Wynette and Jones are in top form on this compilation; its creation long before hard living and the road left their scars on remarkable voices. The harmonies are beyond superb and the emotions run deep. This duo didn't just sing songs; they lived them. Buy this CD and become part of the experience that was Country Music Royalty.

5.0 out of 5 stars George and Tammy - need one say more?, September 23, 1998
This review is from: George & Tammy - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This CD could have also been titled, 'The Life & Times of George & Tammy'. Musically speaking, it's all here. THE CEREMONY captures the near sticky sweet love and honor that all their fans delighted in when they wed in 1969. WE LOVED IT AWAY shoves the painful reality into the spotlight and brings back the disappointment we all felt when they divorced in 1975. In between we find promises of trying (WE'RE GONNA HOLD ON) ... vows of unending love (TAKE ME and NEAR YOU) ... laughter (GOD'S GONNA GET YOU FOR THAT) and tears (SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA). Listening to their greatest duet hits makes one meloncholy. Oh, it's not the singers or the songs - both shine on this greatest hits collection. It's the recognition that, especially with Wynette's recent death, a musical bookmark in country music's history is gone and a time when we could cherish a "Mr. & Mrs. Country Music". A time when we all wished we were, indeed, not the "jet set", but instead the Jones and Wynette set

5.0 out of 5 stars How Can You Go With These 2?, October 16, 2002
This review is from: George & Tammy - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I own 6 Tammy and George CDs but this is the cream of the crop. I can't explain why I prefer them singing together, but not separately. What a strange chemistry must have percolated between them!. And what was life like at home? High points are "Golden Ring", "Near You", "We're Not the Jet Set" and "The Ceremony". Tammy and George fans can buy this CD without reservation. Country fans unfamiliar with the great, "classic" male/female duets such as Conway/Loretta or Dolly/Porter owe it to themselves to listen to at least one such album. I can think of no better choice than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Country Music doesn't get any better than this., January 5, 2011
This review is from: George & Tammy - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)

This album from the 70's shows what Country Music was like at its pinnacle. This music came from grass roots, and continued to improve until it reached its apex in the 70's.It was the music of the people singing about the trials ,successes and heartbreak of the people who wrote the music, sang the songs, and devoted their lives to travelling the highways and byways of North America bringing it to the people.Radio was the real medium that spread it verywhere, augmented by jukeboxes in the diners and bars and at home with records. That all changed ,not for the better ,but for the worse;and not by the people who wrote and sang the songs or even by the people who listened and loved the music;but the musical establishment.Music ,like other enterainment such as sports, movie stars etc. used to have interesting characters who were bigger than life, but real and interesting. That has all ,as the saying goes "gone with the wind".The reason for this change can be debated;but personally I believe that the industry establishment and the unsatiable search for huge incomes and profits,is to be blamed. As Emmylou Harris once said ,t"hey took our music out of the kitchen and parlor and put it into the studios, and it hasn't been the same since".
Tammy Wynette and George Jones were great as soloists ,but there was an unbelievable magic when they were together. There is no believability in the stuff that is offered today ;which may be what is wanted as line dance or country rock ,but in no stretch of the imagination,is it the music of the people and what came to be loved as Country Music.
The songs on this album will bring it all back to you and when you listen to it you can believe that it was written from life experiences and sung from the heart and soul for the fans, not the establishment.
Will Country Music ever return to its roots and people? Who knows, but in the meantime we still have these elxcellent albums to listen to, while the Legends slowly fade from the scene.
George Jones,one of the best, said it all in his song;
Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?"

5.0 out of 5 stars The Jones and Wynette set, February 14, 2004
This review is from: George & Tammy - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
this GOLD album {the 1977 vinyl didn't go GOLD...it was a combination of those sales and the sales of the CD re-issue that put it over 500,000 sold}. But, this is George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Since when did record sales mean THAT much to listeners and fans? The material on this CD ranges from 1971-1977. George and Tammy enjoyed a streak of hit duets that ran from 1971-1981, the same time span of Conway and Loretta. however, George and Tammy were married and their singles reflected what the public assumed their private life was like. Because the duo could get so personal sounding, many of their songs were written exclusively for them by Billy Sherrill, Norro Wilson, Carmol Taylor, and ironically George Richey (Tammy would end up marrying Richey in the late '70s). Also, because of this personalization of their solo and duet recordings, it sent the sales of their singles through the roof. There are 7 Top-10 hits on here and 3 hits that charted below the Top-10. Unlike Conway and Loretta, the duo of George and Tammy issued singles that would over-lap with solo songs and they eventually fell victim at country radio to what Conway and Loretta avoided: over-exposure to the point that it causes a DJ or a listener to quickly refuse to hear someone again. If you'll notice, a lot of their singles charted lower than their popularity suggested because of the DJ's resistance to play them. For the casual fans not interested in hearing the complete duet hits of the couple, this 1977 album does the job because it showcases all of their classic hits from 1971's "Take Me" to 1977's "Southern California". the only single from the 1971-1977 era that's missing is "Old Fashioned Singing", a gospel song. Their 1980/1981 hits, "Two Story House" and "A Pair of Old Sneakers" are missing of course and they can be found on the Epic release 16 BIGGEST HITS.
