Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-Drawing heavily on previously published books and periodical articles, this biography traces Bush's life from his birth through the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries earlier this year. Wukovits examines the controversies that have surrounded Bush's presidential candidacy, such as his appointment to the Texas Air National Guard, the rumors of his drinking and drug use, and questions about his rapid rise to political power. The author explains how the prominence and political power of the Bush family was both a help and hindrance to George W. Wukovits uses numerous quotes from the subject and his family as well as from friends and political opponents. He also includes sidebars with longer excerpts from books and other published material. Average-quality, black-and-white photos add little to the text. This is a readable biography that would serve interested readers or report writers. However, most libraries may wish to wait for forthcoming books that will include the results of the upcoming election, when it will become clear if Bush will remain a newsworthy figure.

4.0 out of 5 stars What's he all about, George W?, September 15, 2000
This review is from: George W. Bush (People in the News) (Hardcover)
His goal for Texans to take "renewed personal responsibility" for their lives was one he took on for himself. Although a lot of the material here can be found in other sources, this is is a very current biography, ending just before Bush's defeat of Senator McCain in the 2000 Republican presidential primary. Wukovits traces W's life from childhood until then using quotes from family, friends, fellow business people, and government officials. Not a white-washed account, the negatives as well as the positives of his life are treated fairly objectively. Black and white photos, notes, index, and a list of works for further reading are included.
