A few brief paragraphs describe the event. One illustration accompanies each spread; many are reproductions from old paintings, prints, and newspapers and are printed on parchment-colored background. Large type and an open format contribute to making these books quick and easy reading for those beginning to learn about American history. They would be supplemental to first-purchase titles with interesting narratives and original illustrations such as David A. Adler's A Picture Book of George Washington (1989) and Steven Kroll's The Boston Tea Party (1998, both Holiday).
