_George Washington Never Slept Here_ can be skipped - it contains quite a few errors, and the author does not cite her sources, so it is not even a useful jumping off point for further research.

Her entry on Benning Road is a good example of the problems w/the book - she claims (w/no evidence) that it's named after Georgia state justice Henry Louis Benning, rather its actual namesake, William Benning (1771-1831), an early D.C. landowner whose estate fronted onto the road that now bears his name.

Unfortunately, there is not a useful reference book on D.C. street name origins available at the moment.

A wonderfully researched book about the who's and what's were the bases for naming Washington's streets and avenues. Any real estate agent, who wants to know the derivation of the streets, MUST buy this hard-to-find book. The DC Real Estate agents association should republish and distribute to its members.
