5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny soccer mom detective
This was very funny and a really quick read. It's not classic literature with hidden themes that you could write a term paper about, but since I'm not in college, I don't really want to read classic literature with hidden themes that I could write a term paper about. I love the interaction between the detective and her children. The title says this is #1 in a series, so I...

2.0 out of 5 stars If you like one dimensional characters and plots that go nowhere, this is the book for you
I'm sorry but there is no character growth--I mean a grown (divorced mother of two) woman who is so nervous about dating that she (supposedly a good cook) consistently burns food whenever the goody two shoes wannabe boyfriend is in the vicinity? The author sets the story in the area of Maryland I live in and while I am far from a home town booster, there are a lot of...

I'm sorry but there is no character growth--I mean a grown (divorced mother of two) woman who is so nervous about dating that she (supposedly a good cook) consistently burns food whenever the goody two shoes wannabe boyfriend is in the vicinity? The author sets the story in the area of Maryland I live in and while I am far from a home town booster, there are a lot of quirky things she could have thrown in and didn't. The old Trixie Belden books have a more complicated plot than this book does. The only reason I give this 2 stars is that I didn't have to pay for this tripe.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clever romp through the dangers of suburbia, October 27, 2010
This review is from: George Washington Stepped Here: Karen Maxwell Mystery Series #1 (Heartsong Presents Mysteries #20) (Mass Market Paperback)
What a delightful book. K. D. Hays intertwines humor, mystery, romance and family adventure in this first novel of the Karen Maxwell mystery series. With a gentle touch of humor, she makes a surprisingly difficult feat--writing with depth about personal relationships and challenges--look smooth and easy. This is an enjoyable read about likable people with a well-penned flavor of Maryland thrown into the mix. An added treat is that Hays writes with knowledge about historical re-enactors, giving the reader a realistic glimpse into that world. Highly recommended.

This is K's first mystery, and the first in a series of three. Karen Maxwell is an everyday mom looking for her place in society after having her marriage ripped apart. Using humor and ingenuity, Karen is given her first chance at detective work. Though volunteering at a historical sight in Baltimore is not her idea of fun, Karen's heart is alight by the Blacksmith on sight. Humor & emotions now join Karen as she seeks out the thief. This is an entertaining read with great character development! I loved Karen, and am looking forward to reading about her and her Blacksmith friend in her next adventure!
