Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7-9--This biography opens with Washington's inaugural as the first president of the United States, and then provides details about his entire life. Old includes information about her subject's personal and public persona, but her main focus is on Washington's enormous public-service contributions. Though she writes in an admiring tone, she does show readers the man behind the hero by debunking some of the myths about his childhood and providing critical analysis of his leadership decisions. The author also includes considerable background about both the era and the events Washington influenced, and uses some primary-source materials. Illustrations consist of average-quality black-and-white photos, art reproductions, and source documents. The reading list includes several YA titles, and a number of Internet sites and addresses are provided as well. Although this book is far better than John Rosenburg's fictionalized Young George Washington (Millbrook, 1997), it joins a field already crowded with other well-written biographies such as Milton Meltzer's George Washington and the Birth of Our Nation (Watts, 1986). An additional purchase for libraries that need more research materials on Washington or the Revolutionary era.

More About the Author

Wendie Old began writing in high school but didn't get books published until the early 1990s. They immediately collected awards. Her series of middle school biographies each were honored with the NCSS/CBC Notable Book award from Social Studies teachers. TO FLY, THE STORY OF THE WRIGHT BROTHERS, Clarion 2002, a book for elementary school readers, won many awards -- one from all the teacher groups (except the Math teachers), Boston Globe - Horn Book Honor Book, ALA Notable Children's Book 2003, and was on many state reading lists.

She enjoys being a children's librarian in a public library. When she discovered the lack of information about Groundhog Day -- she wrote a book about that. (See if the groundhog near you is mentioned in that book. Most of them are.)

She writes picture books as well. Her first published picture book, Stacy Had a Little Sister, is still being used as bibliotherapy with children who have had siblings die of S.I.D.S.

Her other picture books were published under the pen name -- C.W. Bowie. She and two friends wrote them together and then combined their names to come up with C.W. Bowie. She's the "W" part of the name.

Her blog at wendieold.blogspot.com is called Wendie's Wanderings and it does exactly that. It rambles on about the writing life, happenings at her library (September is Spider Month, yikes!), book reviews, her grandchildren, and her many adventures while traveling and promoting her books.

4.0 out of 5 stars George Washinton's Life, June 1, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: George Washington (United States Presidents (Enslow)) (Library Binding)
In my opinion George Washington was one of the greatest men to live. He was born Febuary 22 1732. When he was young he married Martha Custies and moved to his beloved Mount Vernon. Right after he got there the British attacted, and Washinton lead his men in the Revolutuonary War. One night they camped at the freezing Valley Forge just miles away from the British army. George was also the first President of the U.S.A.
Wendie C. Old wrote this book. People whom like learning about our country, war strategies, and history should read this book. In the first chapter it gave an introduction about his life, but from then on it's in chronological order. This book had strong points in talking about his presidency and weak points in talking about his family. Altogether it is a very awsome book.
