Great "American" Music,
By
This review is from: George Whitefield Chadwick: Symphonic Sketches/Melpomene Overture/Tam O'Shanter (Audio CD)
George Chadwick may be one of the underrepresented composers of the late 19th/early 20th centuries. His orchestral scores are colorful, exciting and new. His biggest detractors argue that he is merely a conglomeration of German and French influences, but what better represents the music of a nation of immigrants? Listeners will not get the "Copland/Gershwin" sound from his music, but given half a chance, most will come to enjoy this important early composer of American Classical Music. Tam O'Shanter is probably the best work on the disc, but the others are worthy of listening and performance.

This review is from: George Whitefield Chadwick: Symphonic Sketches/Melpomene Overture/Tam O'Shanter (Audio CD)
This is one of a 2 disc anthology collection that samples the best of Chadwick's symphonic works. Performances by Serebrier are colorful and very heartfelt. A first recommendation to know Chadwick's musical arts. |
