Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When readers first met George the duck in George at the Shore, he was opening a beachfront store and merrily counting his merchandise. Now he's trying to decide what color to paint his house. He and Mary, his marmalade cat friend, mull over the possibilities offered in nature and discover that each color has a fervent advocate. When they discuss red, "like poppies, or geraniums, or cherries picked in the spring," the ladybugs pipe up, "Red is joyful, a splendid color!" For purple, "like figs, and irises, and delicious grapes," a purple butterfly chimes in, "It would be most original of you!" Bassede's sun-drenched setting in the south of France will have adults drooling, but even younger readers will cotton to the delicate watercolor renderings of poppy-dappled fields and fruit-laden gardens. The final decision of what shade to paint the house seems incidental next to the sumptuous spreads of the great outdoors. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSIn sun-dappled watercolors, Bassde chronicles the dilemma of a home-owning duck who must decide what color to paint his house. Aided by his friend Mary, a marmalade-colored cat, George consults a lizard, a ladybug, a bluebird, a cow, a horse, a butterfly, a flamingo, and a frog about possible hues. The final scene shows a newly painted green door on Georges house as the cast of friends mix and mingle at a garden-party celebration. This slight story is strengthened by appealing illustrations that present a variety of activity, composition, and perspective. The ample use of white space will focus attention on the cartoon-style animal characters as well as the corresponding plants mentioned in the text. However, it is odd that the author uses the word mimosa to refer to a yellow-flowered, long-stalked ground plant instead of the tree with clumps of distinctive blooms and touch-sensitive leaves. Also, children are sure to wonder why all of the painting activity thats depicted visually results only in a slightly refreshened front door. Whether this is Bassdes joke or the previous scenes are imagined is unclear.Sue Sherif, Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Library, AK
