Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Knopf includes George's Marvelous Medicine and Fantastic Mr. Fox in its roster of handsomely redesigned hardcover Roald Dahl reissues. In the first novel, George comes up with a potion to improve the mood of his grumpy grandma; the second centers on the efforts of farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean to catch the titular thief. Both feature Quentin Blake's original illustrations and include an interview with the author. (June)

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Richard E. Grant performs this reading of Roald Dahl's tale (Puffin, pap. 1998) with an appropriately British accent. Fully-voiced, the production is expressive and pleasing, making a great story an even better read-aloud. As George seeks a cure for his grandmother's grumpiness, his creative elixir produces surprising results. Listeners will appreciate the humor, suspense, and resolution in this silly plot so typical of Dahl's writing. Appropriate for listening centers, reading classes, literature studies and general circulation, the length and reading level of this title will be appreciated by those who work with reluctant readers. Consider this purchase essential for libraries with audio collections.

More About the Author

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to"a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years. The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven - the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children's Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl's children's books.

4.0 out of 5 stars How I rated Georges Marvelous medicine, November 8, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: George's Marvelous/ (Paperback)
Have you ever had a rotten relative that you would like to get rid of? Well this is the book for you.

Hello!

My name is Natasha. I read the book George's Marvelous medicine

This book is written by: Roald Dahl

This book is wonderful. It's about a boy named George. George has a grandma that acts like a wicked witch. Throughout the book George tries to make medicine that would make his nasty grandma be nice.

I really like this book because the author describes the medicine and the characters and what happens to them so well that I could picture it in my mind.

I recommend this book to kids who have wild imaginations and like to make pretend potions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious book!! Fabulous for all ages!! Also adults!, March 3, 1999
By A Customer
George's Marvelous Medicine is a fantastic book, for all ages! It's hilarious and will make anyone laugh. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to get your nose out of it!!! I would rate this book a most definite five, or the highest rating possible!!! I read this while I was on vacation and no one could get me to go anywhere! The plot was set in the English countryside, where an eight year old boy, named George was stuck with his horrid grandma, who told him all sorts of terrible stories that frightened him to death! Eventually, George got so fed up with the obnoxious old hag, that he made up a special medicine, to replace her regular daily medicine. The medicine works wonders, and makes the grandma taller than a house, and very spunky!! If you enjoy strange and wonderful humor, fun and exciting books, or Roald Dahl books, I strongly reccomend this!!!

Do you have a grumpy old relative or a bully that you want to get rid of? Well, in the book George's Marvelous Medicine, George has the same problem. George is an 8 year old boy who has to spend the day with his "horrid, grouchy, grizzly, old grunion of a grandma." Luckily George gets an amazing plan to give his grandma a taste of her own medicine (literally.) Read this book and see what George puts in his recipe and what happens to his grandma.

"You're growing too fast, George!" Grandma said. George does not like the cranky, mean, old grandma. How could George find a way to get Grandma to be just a little bit nicer? Grumpy Grandma had never gotten off of her chair in a very long time. Finally, George thought of it! He would make a Marvelous Medicine. Just wait until Grandma drinks this! Read George's Marvelous Medicine to find out what happens.
