Grade 5-7-- The collapse of the Soviet Union has created numerous small autonomous or loosely confederated states about which little information exists. While these three volumes have flaws, they do supply basic facts. Each contains double-page spreads on the states today; the ethnic and religious makeup of their respective populations; their history; and their current social, economic, and political outlooks. Full-color photographs, reproductions, and maps aid in placing these small areas in a larger world context. The prose is almost telegraphic in its brevity, and occasionally information is missing. For example, a bar graph in The Central Asian States shows national income per capita ranging from 120 to 60, but does not identify the units. Each book ends with a "Chronology and Famous People" section, with picture captions blending into the chronology in a confusing manner. Roberson's Russia (Macmillan, 1992) covers many issues discussed here in greater detail, but is for an older audience and has a more general focus. --Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA
