Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10?The geography, history, government, and the cultures of this Transcaucasian country are covered in an encyclopedic style. The positive aspect of this format is that it is easy to find information for reports. On the negative side, this volume, like others in the series, tends to include too many lists of names of places and people and too few explanations. The details of Georgia's early history, beginning with the middle Paleolithic period, will probably overwhelm most readers. While sections on the economy and lifestyle are better, the attention given to dialects of the Georgian language and minority religions will not hold the interest of many readers. The many full-color photographs are good, but there are a few mistakes in captions. The port of Batumi is described as "near the Soviet border with Turkey" and a snapshot of two billboards, one in Georgian and the other in Russian, is captioned, "Georgian text outside a cinema," leaving readers to guess which is in Georgian. The unannotated bibliography ranges from Michael Boyette's Soviet Georgia (Chelsea House, 1989), written for children, to Ronald Suny's The Making of the Georgian Nation (Indiana Univ. Pr., 1994), a scholar's history for college students. For middle school students, Georgia (Lerner, 1993) has a more coherent and readable text.?Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign
