5.0 out of 5 stars This book made my garden grow!
I have tired of reading gardening books written by someone in England or New York.

This book is written by two of us........and they know Georgia gardening! Bravo!

My garden has never looked better, and yours will too after listening to these two fellow Georgians.

This book was pretty disappointing. The scope of the book was fairly small (one state) yet a surprising amount of plants are left out. The information it contains is ok, but you can get all that information and more in other sources. There is a lot of repeated information on soil amendment and not much information on the care of the individual plants. Often, 3/4 of a page is devoted to a description of the plant rather than it's care. Some references to varieties are given, but not nearly enough. Most planting explanations revolve around starting from seed, transplants are not often mentioned.

I would buy Month-by-Month Gardening in Georgia instead. I got it after I bought this one and it contains all of the information here (sometimes verbatim), but also includes month-by-month tips on caring for the plants.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's hope for novice Southern gardeners!, May 26, 2000

This review is from: Georgia Gardener's Guide (Paperback)
My husband and I are about to buy our first home, and are truly babes in the wood about landscaping and gardening. After reading (and re-reading) Walter's and Erica's book, I think I'm up to the challenge of creating a handsome yard that will survive our unpredictable winters and sultry summers. Their advice about what will grow and flourish (and more importantly, what *won't*) has been invaluable to me in planning what I want to plant in the months and years to come. A wonderful book!

3.0 out of 5 stars An incomplete plant list, April 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Georgia Gardener's Guide (Paperback)
The best part of the book is the introduction. Otherwise, some of the plants I see most often around Georgia are not listed - daylilies aren't in there! Other than that, it is well organized, but I wouldn't consider it a good list of what to plant in Georgia.

I found Walter's book to be a great resource for someone like myself who is learning to garden in Georgia red clay after planting in New Jersy black soil. I keep this book on my coffee table for a quick reference. The material is well organized and easy to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for beginners, October 10, 2000

I thought this was very helpful, being a recent transplant to Georgia. The information not only gives you the exact planting conditions, a brief history, and several ideal selections, I thought the descriptions were on target. Although yes, I find that other books are more detailed in terms of pests and may have larger pictures, this book gives great instructions specific to Georgia and the west piedmont area of the Carolinas and is a constant reference year round. This is a fabulous book for those of us who want to know what is the best choice to plant in that needy section of the garden!

3.0 out of 5 stars it is ok, but..., July 17, 2000

The book is little more than a list of plants and their major characteristics, information that is available in a better format in innumerable other books. The text isn't innacurate, just limited. For experienced gardeners, Sothern Living Garden Book is much better. New gardeners would probably learn more from the Rodale or Ortho books. The authors are well known southern gardeners; I'm surprised they didn't attempt something that would show their talent better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for quick info before you plant, May 2, 2008
By
I like the book for a quick reference if I am planting something new. It also had plants I'd never heard of so that was interesting. No, it is not a definitive guide to every plant that COULD be planted in Georgia, but who cares? It does have plenty of favorites and plenty that you can find easily at your local nursery. I don't care for books that mention plants that I fall for then can't find anywhere. This book is divided into sections that are easily to follow, it has pictures galore, and it gives basic planting/care info for all the plants listed. I found the advice on when/how much to fertilize the plants helpful. The fact that I have such a hard time finding similar info for plants not included...my penstemons for instance just reminds me of how good the information they give is. It's basic enough for anyone to follow but not oversimplified.
