5.0 out of 5 stars For architecture and 18th century history buffs
This is a very useful book for those interested in the nitty-gritty of Georgian architecture: floor plans for houses of various sizes, drawings of ornamental bridges, and architectural details including designs for whole walls.

3.0 out of 5 stars limited value for colonial adaptations of Georgian style
This book has great value for architects of public buildings and monuments, but little guidance on characteristics of the style that can be used in vernacular American adaptations as found on the eastern tidewater. This book has great value for architects of public buildings and monuments, but little guidance on characteristics of the style that can be used in vernacular American adaptations as found on the eastern tidewater. The genius of the many builders and tradesmen of colonial times who were able to simplify and abstract the complex and ornate examples shown in this book will be readily apparent to anyone who has driven the "Plantation Tour" of Virginia's James River. Jefferson's Monticello is another good example.

If limited funds dictate the purchase of only one book on Georgian style, a better choice would be "Get Your House Right" by Marianne Cusato.

I don't think balance, proportion and line can be taught. You either have it or you don't, but it definitely can be cultivated by exposure to construction challenges and real-world building. Swan practiced architecture based on a journeyman's experience with high 18th century design. His elevations are balanced and pleasing and his moulding details are sophisticated, stately and restrained. This is a must-have book for anyone who enjoys classic design or who wants to understand balance and restraint.
