My first memories as a child include this story.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Georgie (Paperback)
As a small child I listened to Georgie on a 45 record. Georgie isn't about a scary haunting, but about the relationship between the Whittakers and Georgie, and how we all need to feel useful in life.

Brings back great memories!,

I loved this book as a child, and I came across it quite accidentally a couple of years ago. My youngest daughter, now 6, counts this as one of her favorite books. Now we read it to each other, almost every night, although I always secretly hope that she will let me read it to her. I love reading it to make it come even more alive (the big door GROANED so...). Her favorite part is when Georgie goes looking for a new home and a ghost at another house turns him away. It's such a fun book!

Georgie and Caspar are soulmates,
By A Customer
This review is from: Georgie (Paperback)
A friendly little ghost named Georgie must look for a new place to live when the gentleman of the house decides to nail down the stair Georgie creaks each night and oil the hinges on the door he squeeks each night. Can ghosts file for unemployment? This endearing story celebrates our interdependence -- it's only when Georgie makes his ghost sounds that Mr. and Mrs. Whittaker know it's bedtime, Miss Oliver the owl knows it's time to wake and Herman the cat knows it's time to prowl. The action moves along at a lively pace and the charming black and white drawings are full of amusing details. Children will be reassured by the fact that even those things rumored to be very scary can turn out to be as friendly as this little ghost.

Georgie is Endearing,

I have been a first grade public school teacher for 38 years. I discovered the Georgie books in the 70's and started reading them to my first grade classes. When I realized how much the children, the parents, the school librarian, the other elementary teachers, and I all prized them, I started reading them to my daughter and son who also adored them, beginning with Georgie. He is a sweet faced, kind little ghost who looks after Mr.and Mrs. Whittaker. He is also very funny and gets himself in and out of many predicaments. I haven't seen these books for years and I was so afraid they were gone forever until I found them on Amazon com! Now I am ordering them for my three grandsons as I know they will love them as much as their mother did.

My 2 1/2 year old rough and tumble boy loves this book. It is such a gentle book (for him), I never thought he'd settle down and listen to it, but he does 100% of the time. Of course I always make the stair CREEEEAK, the door SQUEEEEAK, the big door GROOOOAN, and the big stair MOOOOANNNN, but he also seems to really relate to everything in the book. The context is just perfect for his age. Well before he (& his friends) learned the words for other things, they knew what a door was, time for bed, stairs, cats, barns, and even owls. And the pacing is perfect, gently lulling while the action changes. Love it, love it, love it. Can't wait to get the new copy & retire the one that belonged to my mother. (It got pretty roughed up during my sister & my childhood, when we loved it a little too hard)

I had this sent to my granddaughter who is two years old. She loves it! Her father has to read it to her every night. He said that he remembers it as one of his favorites.

i remember this book from the captain kangaroo show. i recently found a copy at a bookstore and grabbed it up--the pictures are as charming as ever and the story still made me smile. definitely a great book for kids: non-threatening and very cute.

Georgie,
This review is from: Georgie (Paperback)
Like one of the other reviewers, GEORGIE is my first book-memory. Georgie became my imaginary best friend; my mom and dad had to set a place at the dinner table for him, etc. That was the only book I wanted to have read to me.
Funny co-incidence: 40+ years later and I have been happily married to Mr. Whittaker for 30 years.
