"Geotechnical Testing, Observation, and Documentation" is an in-depth field manual for soil technicians and field engineers. Designed to be a reference guide during the investigation, grading, and construction phases of geotechnical projects, Tim Davis' book has helped thousands of readers understand common laboratory and field tests, classify soil accurately, interpret project recommendations, and document the entire construction monitoring process. This updated and expanded edition offers much new material on topics such as deep foundations, asphalt, concrete, and loss prevention. Commonly asked questions appear at the end of every chapter, and a comprehensive case study presents each step of a sample project, from site investigation and lab work through construction and documentation. A quick reference chapter summarizes current tools and references, explains survey and grading stakes, evaluates compaction equipment, and presents frequently used formulas and equations. In the appendixes, the glossary has been significantly expanded, an answer key to chapter questions is provided, and a collection of sample forms and diagrams is available for immediate use." Geotechnical Testing, Observation, and Documentation, Second Edition", is valuable useful for training new technicians and providing a refresher for veterans. 3.0 out of 5 stars For technicians, not engineers, July 15, 2010
Judging from the title and the fact that this book is published by ASCE press, I assumed that this book was written by a geotechnical engineer for an engineering audience, and I read the book in order to deepen my understanding of geotechnical testing, observation, and documentation.

Instead, it turns out that the book is written by a technician, and the emphasis is on giving practical hands-on advice to technicians regarding how to do their daily job in the field and lab. As a result, the book lacks theoretical background, and there are a few points where the author's understanding and terminology aren't quite correct. Moreover, most of the book consists of an elementary review of some basic points, combined with information which was too mundane to be of use to me.

In short, while this book may be useful to geotechnical technicians, I'm doubtful that many geotechnical engineers will derive much benefit from it. Also, note that the book is only about 200 pages and the font is somewhat large, so the price is high relative to the amount of content.

At first glance, This book angered me. Their has never been a book so complete from a technical stance. After twenty five Years of learning through first hand Experience over that time studying Earth Science, Architecture, Construction Technology and, being lucky enough to have known some great people who mentored Me.
This book has 75% of what I knew and, 80% of what I know. TWENTY FIVE YEARS LATER!
Tim I'm gonna kick Your ass.
