The blue line won't shake down.

The blue line wouldn't move up or down no matter if I try to measure the body temperature or shake the thermometer.

This one read about 2 degrees lower than the Hg standard.

I had high hopes for this thermometer, after reading a medical article comparing it with standard mercury (Hg) thermometers in a clinical trial. All the accuracy, but without the significant health risks if it breaks. Well, I still have an "old fashioned" Hg thermometer, in addition to an electronic probe and an ear device from a major manufacturer (for the home, not professional market).

When I purchased this, I compared it to the Hg thermometer, since I have one and I was curious about the new Hg substitute. First, I put them both under my tongue simultaneously. This one read about 2 degrees lower than the Hg standard. I thought that its larger size might have allowed air to get by my lips & cool it. I then did two back-to-back measurements; Geratherm, Hg; Geratherm, Hg. Four minutes each, all at rest, one immediately after the other, and always placing them in the same location. Both devices were "internally" consistent - that is the Hg gave the same temp both times, sequentially, as did the Geratherm. So far, so good. Consistency is necessary in a measuring instrument. HOWEVER, on both occasions the Geratherm now measured a full two (2) degrees HIGHER than the Hg! NOT good! I then checked my temp using the oral electronic probe; it was 0.2 degrees off from the Hg. I then used the ear probe (both ears) and surprisingly it, too, was actually very close to the Hg (0.2 degrees difference between the 2 ears; average 0.3 degrees off from Hg, just a bit lower otic (ear) than oral).

For this reason, I'm returning it, and I'm going to try another one. I suspect that it's a manufacturing defect explained by the construction of this thermometer - it's a glass tube within a second glass housing, and there's a paper scale behind the capillary tube containing the liquid.

This thermometer is a piece of junk. I shook it down for over 7 minutes and could never get it down a single millimeter. Returned it to the store.

This thermometer is very accurate. At first, my temp was reading 101 for two days. I ran the thermometer under cold water and it still read 101. I decided to go online to read the manual. I read that the thermometer should read below 36 C prior to taking temperature. In order to get the liquid below 36 C, you have to hold the thermometer as close to the upper end and shake it with 15-20 rapid wrist movements. So after each use, remember to return the liquid to below 36 C.

Never worked, straight out of the box. Looked like it was too good to be true, it sure was. Do not buy.

This thermometer has a blue line, yes. The blue line does not budge and is not meant to. You have to tilt the thermometer back and forth to see it, but there is a SILVER line, thicker than the thin blue line you can see from the side, that measures the temperature. It absolutely works. I've tested it against accurate thermometers, and this performs very well.

You do have to shake it quite a bit - hold it at the very tip (not the end you put in your mouth) and flick it down with 20 rapid wrist movements. I have to get mine all the way down to the bottom as I consistently run low temps due to my hypothyroidism. So I must do 20 wrist flicks about three times. It works great. Ignore the blue line comments.

Its a good thermometer but it has an awkward shape which makes holding it in the mouth uncomfortable. I use it as an underarm thermometer and it works just fine. I tested it against my digital and it was just as accurate. Good buy for the price if us it as an underarm.

I purchased two of these as a backup thermometer for my digital thermometers. No mercury and both work good.

Piece of garbage. Shook the thing like the instructions said, and i could never get the blue line down. while continuing to shake the thermometer i sat down in the chair and thats when it accidentally hit the armrest and broke. At that point I had no choice but to place it in its appropriate place...the garbage can. dont waste your money.
