Product Description

From the Manufacturer

As legacies go, a man could do worse than being survived by the famous knife he designed. Such is the case with the late colonel rex Applegate. He was one of this proud nations top authorities on close-quarters combat in particular and fighting knives in general. The applegate-fairbairn covert stands with the applegate-fairbairn combat as lasting symbols of the colonels dedication, expertise and sense of purpose. It should come as no surprise that these two knives are known internationally as best-of-class among folding tactical knives. They have rightfully earned a reputation for unmatched strength, durability and balance. More than that tactical professionals have high regard for the high carbon stainless steel blade. As well as the glass-filled nylon handles and the patented rotolock. The combat has the added convenience of a hearty pocket clip

This knife gave me evertyhing I wanted, nice size edge for slicing. An edge for ropes and locking mechanism that no other can match. Well worth money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Designed by a Knife Genius, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 05785 Applegate-Fairbairn Convert Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is the brainchild of Rex Applegate, although Fairbairns design was the original egg that hatched this whole lot, Applegate is the one who took it to this level. Baisically this knife has everything you need and more, the weight, control, ergonomics(hand fit and feel), are beyond perfect. The knife does normally require a little adjustment to the main nut so the deployment is just right but that is to be expected out of the box. Benchmade has a tool called the blue box or something like that but it is a screwdriver tool with all the bits required for most pocket folders. Worth picking up, as some knives you have around may just need a loosening or tightening at the main axis nut.

Tactically, this is the best there is, tactically there is no flaw whatsoever, the point may look weak but it is very strong. I use my knife for utility purposes and it is very very durable. Also the extra safety lock really adds peace of mind to the standard liner lock. This knife will handle it all, it may not replace a crowbar but for those who really like to abuse their knife this will handle whatever you might think of. My one and only qualm is I would like to see Gerber use titanium to make the handle scales and perhaps finish it with their famous cat's tongue grip from their old mark 2's. And maybe a satin finish in a different steel, if we're going stainless it should be either d-2 or s30v. Hell even VG-10 is better than this 154cm crap, 154cm is technically not a bad steel but it was never meant for knives, it is so popular because of propaghanda and knife makers taking the easy way. 154cm was originally develop for jumbo jet propellar blades not knife blades, it doesn't lose temper when grinding so knife makes got it easy with this steel, but as far as performance goes, the edge it takes tends to get slick rather than toothy, and if your not using a diamond sharpener it can give you some trouble. The edge can be maintained with ceramic or arkansas stone but I found that it definately needs a diamond touch up once or twice a month. That is with very heavy to moderate daily use of course. The serration is longer on this new one too which I like.

This one may not seem as fancy as other like sog or benchmade but really it is the best knife I have ever owned. Spyderco's are nice too, but after temporarily retiring my covert in favor of a spyderco military(great knife), for about six months or so, I have gone back to my trusty partner the covert. It's just better overall.

1.0 out of 5 stars Appplegate-Fairbairn Covert 05785, September 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gerber 05785 Applegate-Fairbairn Convert Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
First knife received appears to be used and Amazon exchanged it with a "new" one, which arrived in the box without any platic bag, it was just the product in the box. Finish coating on the blade is poor, uneven coating can be seen near the serrated edge and blade was not sharp at all, opening the knife can be smother, its more for collecting than EDC.
