5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy Knife
This is a great knife. It stays sharp for a very long time and is very sturdy. The handle on it is very comfortable and easy to grip. It can open and close very smoothly and it locks into place very securely. I have used this knife for many projects and on many camp outs, and it held up well for all of them. The belt clip on it is also very secure and durable. If looks...

I received one of these knives as a hand me down and used it extensively for a few months. It was predominately used for cutting rope, boxes, feed bags and cans. The ergonomics are great and the serrations assist the knife's functionality and prolong the blade's edge. The aesthetic value is a selling point, however I don't like the closed back of the knife which forms a reservoir for grime and dirt.

There was one troubling characteristic to my knife. The liner lock eventually failed in the manner mentioned in a previous review. If enough force and torsion was applied to the blade, the liner lock would slip. Granted, I was using an older knife that had been beaten up a good bit. I would exercise caution if you want to use this blade for heavy duty work. It's a good looking general purpose knife, but if you are going to be doing some heavy duty work with it you should search elsewhere for a safe and reliable utility blade.

I strongly recommend this knife to anyone who needs a sharp, durable knife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made my husband very happy!, September 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
My husband had asked for a new knife for his birthday. His only specifications were that it be a Gerber. Thanks to Amazon.com, I can read reviews on many styles. I chose the AR05849 3.0 Black, Serrated Edge due to its rugged good looks and the available reviews. My husband, as well as his co-workers, loves it. He uses it many times everyday and continues to comment on how it holds its edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great full-size pocket knife, September 9, 2007
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had this for a couple of years, and the blade locks open as solidly as when I bought it - no jiggle or play. Once you become familiar with it, it's very easy to open and close with one hand - great if you are holding, say, a box that needs to be opened in one hand and need to grab your knife with the other.

It may be a bit largish for casually pulling out in the presence of other people - a bit intimidating perhaps - but a very useful size, and the serration comes in handy for certain hard-to-cut materials. If I ever decide to get a smaller knife, I'll be sure it has the main features of this one: one-hand opening and solidly locking blade.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tuff little knife, January 10, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have had this knife for awhile now. Probably at least 4 years now. I haven't had a single problem with it. Nothing is coming loose. The blade locks firmly into place and stays there. I use this knife for everything. Not just for cutting either, I have used it for a crowbar, hammer, screwdriver, scraper, axe/saw (small shrubs), and many other things. This knife is holding up fine. The only signs of wear are the black "paint" on the blade and clip is wearing off. When I first bought this knife I thought the rubber would come off. Well, 4+ years later the rubber is still on the knife.
Don't let others scare you away from this knife because they said it's not made in the USA. This is a very well built knife and looks great too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Pocket Knife, June 19, 2007
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have owned several of these knives (I have a habit of letting folks borrow them, like my ex girlfriend). They retain an edge very well, and are light enough to carry clipped to your pocket without wieghing you down. I recommend them to anyone that needs a terrific light wieght fullsized pocket knife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Good, August 10, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I don't have a TON to say about this pocket knife, but I got it as a gift years ago and thought it deserved credit being how respectable the performance has been. I used to work in roofing (HORRIBLE JOB) and I cut a lot of roof shingles with this thing and tar paper, only part that got damaged was the black finish on the blade and even that was minor. I've used it while fishing, and this is where the one handed quick open comes in very handy for cutting lines and whatever else you need to do without any hassle at all. The only downside is that the blade gets kinda dull fast BUT, it also sharpens very quickly to razor blade quality with about 3 minutes on a soft arkansas stone (with oil) then another 3-4 on a hard arkansas (again, with oil). Overall, it has been worth the 40 my mom paid for it at the time, before I knew how awesome Amazon was. Definitely a good pocket mate. Oh, and the clip on the back is also very durable, I use it 24/7 attached to my thick pants pocket when I'm out and about; it's very secure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable lil fella., August 6, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have had this blade for a good while now. (First day it was released) I love it. I am a U.S. Marine and have put this knife through some pretty intense conditions. Rain, dirt, sand, cold, heavy oil, mud, heat, woods, and indoors. It is one of my most durable and dependable blades. Holds a nice edge for a fair amount of time. Easy to sharpen, and works well. Very smooth when deploying the blade using your left or right hand (thanks to the double sided thumb notch). The biggest factor for me is how comfortable the handle grip is, and this sucker is pretty nice to hold.

The only downside to this knife for me is the fact that the black finish on the blade and (super durable pocket clip) wore off, or chipped very quickly. Then again
I have thrown it, dropped it, and utterly abused it, and like any good knife if came back for more. It is NOT A COMBAT KNIFE, but trustworthy as an all purpose utility knife, and an emergency defense weapon. If I lost it; I would buy it again without hesitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Knife, July 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

As a short review, I would quickly say that although I am a little disappointed in the 1 Handed Opening (I thought it would be spring assisted), I can't complain about any other part other than I wish it was larger- but hey, I knew it wasn't a big knife, and therefore I would rate it overall as a great little tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars great knife for the price, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 05849 AR 3.0 Knife, Serrated Edge, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
okay, first off, I got this knife thru a very dubious source..(possible crackhead in a bar) for 5 bucks. Still, it was new in the box. Anyways, Ive had it for about 3 years or so, and I carry it everywhere. Takes an edge well, holds it respectively. My pocket clip is as tight as it was when I got it, still very strong. The lock is strong, never had it close when i didnt want it to. Taiwan printed on the blade, not black, still serrated. Ive beat the crap out of it, hammering stuff, etc, has plenty of dings, still functions fine. Opening, after all these years has loosened a lot. If I really want, I can more or less "flip" it open one handed with no use of the thumb stud. Which may look cool, but I admit could be a safety issue. Not that it falls open, but I can with a medium amount of force open and lock it just by "flicking". I have never used the lanyard loop, but from the feel of the handle a lanyard would break before the handle would. Rubber grips work very well.

Overall, great knife!
