5.0 out of 5 stars EZ Out so good I sold my Benchmade Griptilian!, May 15, 2010

This review is from: Gerber 06701 E-Z Out Skeleton Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
I saw one of these at a local sporting goods store and decided to try it out (seeing how the grip felt, opening it one handed, etc.). I was so impressed with this knife after buying and using it for a month that I sold my high dollar Benchmade 551 Griptilian and kept this one! Being as the Griptilian is considered by many to be the best overall one handed knife out there for under a $100, I decided to review the Gerber EZ Out against it here.....

The Benchmade 551 is a very nice knife but has 4 problems compared to the EZ Out: 1) The knob on the Griptilian used for one handed opening sometimes catches on the pocket when pulling it out and opens the blade (bad news!), the EZ doesn't have this problem and seems snag-free. 2) Weight- The Griptilian weighs 3.9 oz on my postal scale, the EZ Out only weighs 2.6 oz, so it's easier to carry and so light you almost forget it's there. 3) Price- Simple one here, as the Griptilian costs $90 compared to $27 shipped for the EZ Out. and 4)The Griptilian is not that great at cutting and whittling wood because of the way the blade is ground. The EZ Out, on the other hand, cuts almost as good as my Mora knife, which about says it all (Moras are famous fixed blades used in Europe and the US as bush knives, reknowned for their cutting ability as compared to other fixed blades).

So how does the EZ Out feel in the hand compared to the standard of it's class, the Griptilian folder? The Griptilian is famous in the knife world for its comfortable grip and it's elegant design. The EZ Out is so comfortable that I actually prefer it slightly over the Griptilian. At a 1/3 of the price of the Griptilian, this has to be the best value around for a 3.5" blade one handed open pocket knife. Ultralight, easy to open one handed, built tough (made in the USA!), super comfortable, and a great cutting edge, this is a backpacking\hiking dream if wanting to carry a knife big enough to handle most situations without weighing yourself down. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck, January 21, 2002

You can pay alot more for a good knife, but for the money Gerber cannot be beat. They come with a razor-sharp edge and take well to resharpening. I've used mine at work for over two years as an electrician and have grown to really appreciate the quality of this knife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best folding knife I ever owned, January 6, 2011

This review is from: Gerber 06701 E-Z Out Skeleton Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
I carried an E-Z Out for ten years and never found a negative thing to say about this knife. I worked in the parts department of a car dealership and spent half my day cutting open cartons, canisters and blister packs of parts. I must have cut two hundred miles of tape and cardboard with it as well as using it for everything from dressing game to making kindling to paring an apple or slicing a pizza. This knife is light as a feather and beautifully balanced. The clip allows you to carry it in a front pocket, on your belt or even in a carpenter's pocket or boot top. It opens quickly and surely with a solid lock. I could easily open the knife with just one hand without the need of those obnoxious metal pegs most quick opening knives use.
Sadly, I lost that knife just before retiring and promised myself to get a replacement but other things arise and I've put it off for three years now, using unhandy replacements that were given to me over the years on birthdays or at Christmas or whatever. None of them are as light, sharp and easy to use as my old Gerber so I'm ordering its replacement this week. I can't imagine why you wouldn't find this knife as enjoyable to use as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars great knife, May 30, 2004
This review is from: Gerber 06701 E-Z Out Skeleton Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a solid working knife. Mine lasted 3 years before I lost it during a move. I had the serrated version; half straight edge, half serrated. The knife opened easily, held a blade well, was easy to sharpen, and had a solid lock. I used for everything from gutting fish to whittling. For the 20 bucks I paid, probably the most use I've ever gotten out of a pocketknife.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Upland Knife, February 3, 2011

I had a similar Gerber knife, one without the hole slots in the blade itself. As far as knives go, Gerbers are great. These knives are just what you need when hunting pheasant, you can saw the wings off and skin them in no time. They seem to always keep their edge. The reason I had to replace my original was it got lost lending it to someone and forgetting to get it off the truck when he finished. A real bummer. I had that knife for over ten years, used it alot year after year. Keep making your knives Gerber !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great American Made Knife, December 25, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 06701 E-Z Out Skeleton Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
Ibought 2 of these for my brother-in-laws for Christmas and they were both really happy with them. They are good quality and just the right size to carry around and use everyday. I would highly recommend them. They are great knives and they are made in the United States which is more and more rare these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kife for the money, December 18, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 06701 E-Z Out Skeleton Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this Gerber to carry on Boy Scout trips. It has not disappointed. It came out of the box extremely sharp. It is easy to open with one hand. The handle has a good grip and is great in cold weather as opposed to a stainless or aluminium handle which feels so much colder. The fit and finish are nothing to get excited about but if you want a good inexpensive working knife put this on your list.

Easy open, lock back, easy close, razor sharp. The skeleton blade is very light and the handle sits well in your hands. The clip is solid enough, but if you over-stretch it, it will not go back to it's original position. But under normal conditions, this is a great pocket/ utility knife. I have several and use them all the time.

I bought one of Gerber's earlier revisions of this knife a while ago. It lasted me over a decade until I finally lost it this year. The only complaint I ever had was that the screw that held the clip in place would come loose occasionally. A small lock washer solved this problem, and it looks like the problem's been fixed in the newer version.

The knife is light, yet very heavy duty. The blade will keep a sharp edge despite a lot of abuse. The handle is thin, making the knife great for carrying in a pocket, but is easy to grip. I've never had the lock fail on me, but it's easy to operate. Although they removed the hole in the blade for one-hand opening, the skeleton design makes it just as easy to open.

I was a little hesitant that the skeleton design would weaken the blade, but it feels just as secure as the old design, yet is noticeably lighter.
