Gerber 06995 Cutting Knife - 6.18" Blade - DoubleEdge - Clip Point - Stainless Steel

Amazon.com

Featuring the most technically advanced handle ever engineered on a combat knife, the Gerber Silver Trident is the brainchild of William Harsey, Jr. and Chief Watson--a founding member of Navy Seal Team 2. Resistant to heat, UV light and chemicals, the handle is a co-mold of two versions of the material called Hytrel. Inside there's a rock-hard version for strength, while the exterior offers a soft, textured version for extreme grip control. Use the stainless steel butt cap as a hammer.

The double-edged clip point blade is constructed of 154C stainless steel, and heat-treated to achieve a hardness rating of HRC 59-61. That means you get excellent edge retention, strength and flexibility. The non-reflective black blade limits glare and corrosion. The Silver Trident's blade measure 6.18 inches, and it has an overall length of 11.22 inches and a 17.4-ounce weight. It comes with a sheath made of durable ballistic nylon. Backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

We do a lot of training with knives for law enforcement as well as military, it is always a challenge to find a knife that lives up to what the manufacture claims it will do. I have been wanting to get my hands on the Silver Trident for quite some time now and when it finally happened I was blown away. The feel of this knife is one of great balance and comfort the handle conformed to my hand instantly, the guard allows you to feel safe either bare handed or with gloves on, even large padded gloves. The blade is perfect as far as I am concerned extremely durable and holds a great edge, even after many cut test, that I put it through. The striker pommel is great for having to break out glass or drive a stake in the ground. We consider every piece of gear we carry to be a tool and the Silver Trident has fast become my favorite tool. It would be impossible to select just one knife as the best of the best, however if you wished to do so the Silver Trident by Gerber would have to be in the top 3.....

The knife is made of 154CM which is a high quality stainless steal. As far as how sharp the knife, it was really sharp just shy of razor sharp. It seems that this steal in terms of it's sharpness is rated just below S30V. Do not be fooled into thinking that this knife does not hold a great edge though. I had submitted quite a few cutting tests. The knife did not function as well as I had hoped on the paper test, but I soon realized that it is because the knife has a thick blade on it (Don't get me wrong it still cut through the paper fairly nicely and retained a great edge). I next moved on to cutting some bark off of a tree (numerous times). This is were I got a little excited. It cut like warm butter. I had to use little force to make the cuts. I then went to the apple skin test. I was peeling the apple easily. The peels were so thinly sliced. It was a thing of beauty. The knife was extremely well balanced and it was some what of a lighter knife considering the size, than smaller knifes that I have. The saw like blade on the back of the blade is really sweet too. I had cut numerous branches off a tree, and those came down really quite easily. The handle of the knife is really comfy and it does not slip. This is another highlight of the knife. Also the stainless steal butt end is really nice, you can smash stuff with it. It sort of acts as a hammer. In the end the knife is still as sharp as when I got it. If I lost this knife I would get it again. It is a good all around utility-survival knife.

One Hell of a Widow Maker! After looking at the Army's Yarbrough, issused to Green Berets made by Chris Reeves out of Idaho, I feel there's no debate. This Watson-Harsey design made by Gerber is the Model 1911 Colt 45 of Knives, period.

I have been a knife enthusiast for as long as I can remember my favorite knife has been the Natchez Bowie knife its pricey (approximately $660) but its worth it because of its durability but know I have found my pride The Silver Trident its blade is extremely durable, powerful, and deadly its one of the best knives out there it is by far the most balanced blade I have ever had the pleasure of owning it is more durable than the Natchez Bowie knife that people claim is indestructible. I tried the Silver Trident against a thin sheet of steel (1/4 centimeter thick) even after stabbing the thin sheet of steel the Silver Trident's edge remained moderately sharp this blade combines balance, power, and durability the Natchez Bowie knife has surpassed all my tests until recently its blade was severely chipped when I was cutting wood because I accidentally hit my stone pedestal (what I cut wood on) it just goes to show the most expensive items are not always the best. The Silver Trident is by far the best combat knife out there.

For a tool that was originally designed for military special forces, this knife has shown me that it's capable of doing more than just that. The amazing ergonomics and 154CM Stainless with full tang design make this an immediate winner. When you hold this knife in your hand, you will realize why it's the flagship of Gerber steel and at the top of their fixed blade price list. In a brief summary:

* High-Tech handle material is capable of withstanding torture in environments where most knives would of failed, at the same time it retains it's sure-grip.

* Double serrated blade includes a standard serration for most fabric cutting, and a saw-like serration on back of blade for heavier cutting tasks.

* Excellent weight and balance with protective hilt and lanyard hole in pommel for paracord/lanyard use.

* Sheath is MOLLE-friendly and designed with primary intention of being used as thigh rig.

* Sharp out of the box and coated to protect blade from the elements.

* Gerber warranty is at your service if you ever find that this blad has not met your criteria of use.

My lasting impressions:

It's nice to know that a knife designed with the primary function of combat can do so much and still be able to service as a survival/utility/hunting/ and even egress knife if need be. If you are a true knife enthusiast, you need to own a Gerber Silver Trident. Once you hold one of these in your hand, you will understand why they are so special. Gerber hit one out of the park with this one! -JT
