Great handy little tool when you need it.

The phillips head screwdriver works very well and you can never have too many bottle openers on you!

I have only used the pry bar and the bottle opener, but both of them work well.

I have had the Gerber Shard for a few months now and have traveled on an airplane several times. While I have not had the Shard confiscated yet, airport security does look at it very carefully. I had one TSA agent ask me flat out what it was and I told him it was a bottle opener. With that being said, I have tried what I think are all "7 uses" which I have listed below.

1. Bottle opener = works well and looks more respectable on my keychain over the Coors Light one I had on there
2 & 3. Small and medium flat drivers = too wide for most screws that you might use
4. Philips screwdriver = works well with smaller head screws but not helpful on even medium sized screws
5. Wire stripper = not very effective as you have to be very careful so as not to rip the wire, much easier to use a normal wire stripper
6. Pry bar = very effective, I was able to open a can of paint with no problems
7. lanyard/keychain attachment hole (kind of a stretch calling this a use) = large lanyard hole which easily accommodates key chains or hooking to your pack

In terms of the 7 uses, I would say besides the bottle opener the pry bar is the only really other "useful tool. Overall though, if you're looking to replace your free Budweiser or Coors Light bottle opener on your keychain, then this is a great tool. You get a lot of "wow that's cool" factor.

I actually bought this more as a joke since I was buying something else. It has proven to be very handy. The pry bar works good as a standard screw driver and the philips side also works well. I have tried the bottle opener multiple times and it gets the cap off the first time. The pry bar end has also taken the place of my pocket knife when opening products/boxes. It isn't very sharp but it is just enough to bust the tape and get through the twisties.

One feature not listed: the Shard interacts strongly with magnets. A strong magnet can be stuck to a wall or fridge to keep it handy, or stick a magnet to the Shard to extend the magnetism to the tool when working with metal items.

This is not for everybody. It is a handy makeshift tool to have on hand, not a replacement for real tools. You can tear open a box, unscrew a couple screws , open a paint can, etc.

Here are the reasons to buy this in my opinion:
1) If you use the Shard on a key chain, you can stick your keys to a magnet, like a bucky cube. Much quicker to attach and retrieve than hanging on hooks.
2) Attach a magnet to the Shard while unscrewing Philips screws -- helps keep from dropping or losing screws as you remove them.
3) Bottle opener (with a magnet stuck to it) ... you can see a theme here right? Remove a bottle cap and instead of it rolling across the floor it sticks to the Shard.
4) There is no four ... just wanted to reiterate that I love magnets.
5) Prybar works. The philips screwdriver works pretty well as an awl to poke holes.

Reasons not to buy:
1) you wear nice clothing and carry this in your pocket it may tear or damage the cloth. You might be able to sand down the edges, but let's face it, this just isn't something you will carry around.
2) You don't want to support products that falsely claim to do things, such as strip wires.
3) You rarely find the need to pry things open
4) You dislike sharp edges and like refined designs

Overall a tough and useful tool to have around, but has design flaws. If you have need of what it does, it is a good buy.

This product helped me do the following things: break a window, hot wire a car, steal a car, open a beer while stealing a car, and remove a radio from a stolen car. All around great product.

The flat screwdriver tips are not accurately machined, because they are shaped for the prying tool, which makes them less than ideal; but the prying tool functionality is great, as there's no small pocket knife or other little tool I've seen that's suitable for prying - which I seem to need quite regularly. The Phillips end is surprisingly functional. The bottle opener appears quite functional, but I haven't tried it yet. The large hole makes it easy to get my key ring out of the way when using the Phillips tip, gives a good thumb and fore finger grip, and helps it sit well with the key ring in my pocket. The finish is holding up well. I like that it has no blade, so can be carried through airport security. The small size and light weight means that it is comfortable to carry with a few keys, and it doesn't dig in to my leg or cause undue wear to my pocket.

This is the Gerber 22-01769 Shard Keychain Tool, meaning that it isn't a keychain but is designed to fit on a keychain, and at only 3.2 inches in length (8.1 cm), it certainly does. Among its many functions, it will also fit on a lanyard, drive a Phillips screw (and a regular one), open a bottle, strip wires (barely), and serve as a pry bar. Although small in size and low in cost, the Gerber people take this item as seriously as one of their knives or multitools, even to the point of printing each item's serial number on the box and on the back of the implement. It is also TSA-compliant, probably because it isn't large enough to wield as a weapon and doesn't have any dangerously sharp edges (although some prior reviewers have said it can scratch a hole in pants pockets). All of this makes it a useful and worry-free pocket ride-around. Why only four stars? Because it will do all the listed things, but not terribly well. About my only complaint is that the box is so chic in its design that about half the printing appears as medium-gray on a mottled black-and-gray background, and is so small it is nearly impossible to read by purchasers of any age. Made in China. As of now, thank heaven, it is not an Add-On item, but at around seven dollars it now costs nearly twice what I paid for it a week before this review. Remember, this appears to be a quality instrument but it is very small.

I also commend the shopper to the many photos (16 at last count) that owners of the product have posted to this site, a couple of which show the 22-10769 being used in ways that even the Gerber people didn't anticipate.
