All the Essentials You Need for Emergencies at Your Fingertips
When you need one tool for a rescue, bank on the Gerber 22-41870 Hinderer Combat Life Saver Knife with Serrated Edge. Rick Hinderer, a firefighter and knife designer, conceived and designed this knife based on real-life experiences, giving it some of the most important features a firefighter will need while keeping the size small and convenient.

The knife has a 3.5-inch, sharp serrated blade that safely slices through seatbelts, and it will cut through just about anything you'll encounter in the field. The knife also features a window punch and an oxygen tank valve opener.

The knife is crafted with an attention to detail: it includes large features and mechanisms so that it can be used while wearing turnout gloves without problems. An oversized thumbstud makes it easy to open the blade, and the ergonomic handle keeps your hand comfortable while you work.

Gerber's History of Ingenuity
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.

For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Gerber designs popular, dependable tools and knives along with other outdoor gear that helps users accomplish whatever tasks they may be faced with, promoting the lost art of self-reliance.

I am an Industrial Firefighter and bought this knife thinking it was just what I needed to carry on the job. When it arrived in the mail I was excited to find that it felt as sturdy as people had boasted in reviews. I started using it my first day on shift, cutting lashing, chord, and zip ties throughout the day. It fell from my pocket, in the closed position, once from height of about four feet. Later on shift when I sat down to sharpen it, I noticed that two screws had become loose. One screw attached the thumb stud on the blade, and the other loose screw attached the seatbelt cutter. The loose seatbelt hook screw allowed the hook to deploy simply by flicking the knife. This was not what I was expecting from one day of useage in non-emergency mode. I have carried the same Benchmade brand knife for over four years, and used it for everything without it dissapointing me. It doesn't have the bells and whistles that I bought the Gerber for, but it never started falling apart on me. Undoubtedly this review is going to upset all the consumers who love this product, so dont start slamming me about how I dont know anything about knives. I'm simply giving an honest review of MY experience with the Gerber CLS.

I'm a firefighter and have already used this knife at one accident scene to cut the seat belt off an injured victim. This knife is tough, well made and has already proven it's worth to me and the others in my unit.

please allow me to open this review with an advanced appology for my appaling spelling

i would reccomend this knife to anyone however i would doubly recomend this knife to anyone who is going to be using it while wearing gloves

i opened the knife and it was bigger than i had guessed which was a good thing it looked small in the pictures to me
i wear medium gloves and the knife comfortably takes up my whole hand to grip it and it feels nice and sturdy when i grip it the thumb studs and release studs are heavily knurled slipping is not possible. On the downside when opening and closing bare handed you will develop some nice callouses on your thumb. Some may care about this i do not.
i had to practice opening the knife quickly but within 15 min i got it down to 1.5 sec with it cliped to my pocket to open. I then tried it with gloves and that is where this knife truly shines. With gloves the action seem natural where as bare handed it took a second to pick up.
the fact of the matter is the knife is meant for gloves not that it isnt excelent bare handed.
my only grype with it is the safety cutter or whatever it is, is a Bitch to open. i have to use somthing to pry it, however it is amazingly sharp (you could probably start on the hem of someones jeans and with one strong pull get all the way to the belt

i havent had a chance to test the glass breaker which was one of the reasons i wanted this knife so badly but i will update when i do

I am an EMT, so this knife already has plenty of great features built in. I like it better than the original because it has a sharp point, and gives you more flexibility for cutting and piercing. As a tactical knife, the point is thick and strong, the grip gives great control in any type of hold as well as with gloves on, and the window punch adds an extra "kick" to a butt-strike. This is my new everday carry knife because of it's practicality. The price is also better than the original, probably due to the fact it doesn't come with the almost-useless tool kit and the sheath. I am considering getting a second one just to have a spare!

I work as an EMT and respond to 911 emergencies and wanted a knife capable of auto rescue. My father gave me one of his which had a smooth blade and I found that to be unable to cut some of the things I came into contact with often so I knew I needed either a serrated or partially serrated blade. Our company also only keeps our Oxygen wrenches on the ambulance keys so if we need to swap out a tank mid route (and yes it has happened before) we can't because the driver is using the keys to drive the ambulance. I found this knife online and saw it had not only a partially serrated blade but also an oxygen tank wrench on it I thought it was too good to be true, so I ordered one to try it out. By far this is the BEST knife I have owned. The blade feels like a higher quality than the other knives I've used, the seat belt cutter on this is the best one I have come across so far and the oxygen tank wrench works on all of our tanks! Plus Gerber made it so you can access every part of the knife while wearing firefighter gloves; that's a HUGE and necessary bonus! By far this knife was made for EMS and you cannot go wrong with this one.

I am a paid EMT working a minimum of 36 hours a week for an EMS department. I purchased this knife 11/2008 and have carried it regularly until recently. The knife is INCREDIBLY useful I found for the work that I did and was a quick option for cutting and supplemented my trauma shears very well (or became my trauma shears if I lost them for some reason).

Blade - Good length and has required minimal sharpening over the years. I like that the whole knife isn't serrated and adds to the flexibility of use. The material is good quality and the paint has for the most part remained in tact except on the very front edge of the knife. The thumb stud allows for easy opening even with one hand and a slight flick of the wrist. The location of the release also allows for easy manipulation and closure as I usually one-hand it with the back of the blade against my leg.

Window Punch - This is located at the base of the knife and is a small steel tip. Over 3 years and it has remained in good condition with minimal usage. I prefer to use the glass master for knocking out windows but this has proved useful in a pinch.

Seat Belt Cutter - I initially had trouble with this accessory because the screw was becoming loose. After some tightening mixed with opening/closing I was able to find a "sweet spot" and have not had any issues for over 2.5 years now with the cutter. Works great through seatbelts, and can also cut right through clothes, cravats, straps, etc. It is very non-intimidating for the patients because of the size but can actually be faster than trauma shears (Pull good tension on clothing and give a smooth firm pull).

O2 wrench - Can not beat this convenience. Never fails that the plastic O2 keys are never to be found when you have a patient in respiratory distress.
